What would cause this?
 
I picked up yet another FA20 block for dirt cheap. One of the pistons has some pretty bad pinging, and the wall has one scratch. The pistons are coming out anyways obviously but I am mostly just curious what would cause it to get this bad?
The guy I picked up the engine from got it from another guy who got it from another guy so he had no idea.

EDIT: just realized my thread title kind of sucks, MODS if you could add something about the piston into the title please..

That was sorta what I was thinking, I have just never seen the valvetrain do a number quite like that on a piston.. but :iono:.

Broken spark plug electrode from detonation?

Not detonation at all, those marks are from foreign material entering the chamber. Could have started with a spark plug electrode/s as @Gords_zenith said then grown into piston to valve contact.

Something fell into the engine.

Whoever owns the car it came out of can probably find the remnants in their cat.
