GT86 update - guesses and wishes

I am curious what people think will be actually be part of the 2015 upgrade, and what people would *want* for the 2015 upgrade.

My honest guess:
- 15-20 hp bump through tune (easy to reflash to existing cars)
- Minor reliability upgrades
- Minor suspension changes, like the uprated tS arms
- Aesthetic changes to the front and rear
- New wheels (these are a standard refresh item)

Pricing: ~$500 bump from today's prices

My wish:
- Optional tS upgrade package with real brakes, etc.
- 2.5l motor
- Additional weight saving on the front end

Pricing: <$38K total for the upgraded version

I suspect they won't offer my wish option until year 4 or 5. With a six year lifecycle, they will want to take it slow. Too bad for me.

Of course, since most of you are already owners, you might hope they make it worse ;)

I say we should be careful what we wish for. Updates for cars are not always a good thing. Yet i will keep my fingers crossed that they will enhance the 86 and BRZed to our liking. I like the 2.0L motor and a reflash is all that is needed from the factor at this point. I agree in regard to some minor suspension and brake upgrades.

I have really started enjoying my FRS more and more. Because it's so basic. It used to bother me when I started realizing all the differences between the BRZ/GT86 and the FRS. Now I prefer my peeled down version more. Cheers.

Front and tail light close to FR-S or FT86 II concept, revised interior layout, a grand price bump. Thanks.

No Tail light condensation, Exterminated the crickets,Standard arm rest?

But on a various serious note,

Track version option for USA.
Open Top cleared for Production.

I like to see more colors : ) like the Concept Red(Monkey Red), or the Sky metallic blue on a concept BRZ.

Supercharged Option.

honestly the car is nice the way it is, but a little this and that probably wouldn't hurt.

I agree with the modest bump in hp and slight face lift will more than likely happen

But what I want is a flat 6 3.0 n/a based on the current fa20 motor. Lot of room in that engine bay:D

I would like to see an 85hp v4 with vtec and a triptronic transmission. Also wood grain interior would be nice...

LadyFRZ 03-08-2014 07:52 PM

I would like to see exterior changes more than anything.
If it ended up looking more like the concept...Damn.

Also, I really hope interior doesn't get a major facelift. I'd hate to see stereo controls on the steering wheel.

More torque > more HP, at least for me. But even if both were added, there would always be people "NEEDS MOAR POWAH!!!11!!!"

I agree with all those points.

If there's going to be any interior changes, the only benefit this car should see is improved material quality. Under a philosophy of, the less hard plastics the better. If they can improve the space efficiency of the interior that's also welcome.

Power...even if this car put out 300 hp, 300 lb.ft of torque plenty will still say its not enough because the Mustang, Camaro or Challenger still put out more. Maybe its me acting like an old man...but I don't find lots of power to be all that useful in most driving situations. For the majority of cars I find 150 to the 170 range acceptable. Only slow, heavy and cumbersome stuff like the CUVs, minivans and trucks feel they need to be in the 250 range. I've heard the complaints about 200 hp, and after a test drive I concluded that not only this was more power than my previous cars but even better it was power I could easily use. If my driving routine is so slow that 420 hp is a total waste...why do I want the fuel bill of such an engine when I can't use it to its potential...?

Honestly I would be happy with just 200hp and 200tq

The mustang and the camaro are in different leagues, so I have no idea why people compare the power of the twins to the muscle car category. OF COURSE the mustang/camaro are going to have more power. But they handle like tuna boats (They're getting better though, still lol). I saw a dodge challenger pull into a tight parking spot and he needed 2 tries at it.
I look at the twins reviews, and I see A TON of people saying "NEEDS STEERING WHEEL AUDIO CONTROLS," seriously? People are getting so spoiled. My celica had NOTHING. No working ac, I was lucky if the radio worked. But she was my baby. She had ~140HP from the factory but God knows she didn't have that much when I finally got her. It's much more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow.

A torque boost wouldn't hurt, certainly. Torque has more uses in daily driving than hp. Only when you get to AMG levels of crazy torque does it suddenly become useless.

Having only driven the Mustang and Challenger, I will say the Mustang is a very capable car these days. It may have a live axle but Ford somehow made a car that handled very well in spite of that. My only issues with the handling for that car is over rough roads the live axle is a bit of a problem skipping around, the weight is noticeable and the steering feel...better than a regular car but for me too imprecise. The Challenger though...its too bloody big and even heavier so its the stereotypical muscle car. Fast in a straight line, mostly useless at corners.

I personally don't care about steering wheel controls, the less clutter on my wheel the better. Most of my work cars have them but I simply don't find them all that useful, the Fords for instance have a ton of buttons I'd never use. Although I did order a Monogram, so I'd be lying if I said I'm ok with a low spec model, I'm a bit spoiled for comfort.

What is this "tS" thing you keep talking about?

My wish list looks about the same though:

- More mid-range torque/smoother torque band (by tuning or increased displacement - not by forced induction or hybrid)
- 10-30 more hp
- Lighter weight up front (lighter radiator, condenser, plastic or aluminum fenders, forged aluminum control arms, etc)
- Aluminum fixed opposing piston calipers (Brembo or at least Advics)
- Some lightweight forged BBS or Enkei MAT wheels would be cool (but I do like the design of the stock ones)
- Give steering wheel more feel/feedback
- A redesigned center console with a proper slim arm rest
- Memory Seats (manual/non-electric)
- Seat belt height adjusters
- Actual tire pressures display (psi/bar)
- Miles until empty display
- Oil Pressure and Temperature displays instead of analog speedo
- Make or use a better manual transmission oil that's consistently smooth in all temps
- Fix all the previous issues like leaking engine oil and chirping

tailspin 03-08-2014 11:21 PM

Wishlist for 2015:
Fix the chirping and tail light condensation
Update HVAC control material/design for premium BRZ and FRS
small power bump 10-20hp
1" lowered stock suspension

A friend and I swapped cars for a little drive - his Mustang GT for my stock FR-S. After that, he said my car was really fun and very fun to corner and felt his felt heavy in comparison. I, was impressed with his car's power and acceleration, but mostly just wanted my car back.
