Clueless dealers do the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ no favors

I found this article from Road and Track regarding how Toyota and Subaru salespeople aren't knowledgeable enough or putting enough effort into selling our cars.

What do you think?

Personally, I knew more about the car than the sales manager and the salesperson that sold me the vehicle. But I also did pre-order mine and was one of the early adopters of the vehicle.

What have your experiences been like since?

The author of that article doesn't exactly come across as unbiased (an Accord V6? Really? As a viable alternative to the BRZ/FR-S?). Besides, the sales figures on the 86 seems very reasonable for a sporty, small coupe. If anything, they're higher than I would have expected a year or two ago.

(That having been said, I've found that clueless salesmen tend to be clueless about everything that they're selling, not just particular models)

In my experience they're pretty clueless when it comes to all the cars they sell not just the twins. Personally I'd be happy if the manufacturers started selling their cars directly to the consumers. Heck, I'd rather buy from a vending machine.

About 90% of the salespeople at the stealerships have ZERO idea on what they are selling.

That's true. The article is right.

LOL @ "It's French stitching or some shit."

That's pretty much how my experience went the first time I walked into a subaru dealer.

I told him what I was looking at and he basically yelled "ho ho that thing is FAST!" My dad is sometimes a wise @$$ and said "oh... if its that fast then its no good." I played along and he tried coming back with "no no I meant its fast looking"

I didn't buy from there.

The dealership I did buy from said "im assuming you know more about this car than I do" and handed me the keys for a test drive.

"200hp, front wheel drive, ITS A MONSTER. yeah its reminds me of the LFA." - What a sales rep said to me when I pulled up at a lexus dealership to pick up my brother in law's suv.

Actually my sales guy knew everything about this car, history and all. Thing is he is a car enthusiast. Built and moded sport/muscle cars for years. Toyota sales guy who drives a Mustang. He has a very high opinion of our cars. He bought the mustang because he wanted the horse power. The dealer won't let him drive the FRS, they are afraid he will drift it! Yup! He would!

this is the salesman who just got training on LFA got to drive it. Just Learned that something on it was a LFA hand me down. Now he feeds you a blanket statement that sounds totally bullshit. when actuality its only 25% bullshit. i was salesmen and some customers want to wowed by knowlege of salesman. and some want to be bullshitted like telling the the ugly chick/guy they look good when s/he sit in the car they can afford but doesnt want. Its a job like any other hussle. Most times you dont bullshit a customer, they bullshit themself. Coming in thinking they know more then salesman. a Salesman has know more than general knowledge about ever vehicle on the lot. And depend how long you been there and how much inventory has changed dictates how much bullshit you get from a salesman. natural gifts like photograpic memory and ppl skills and dumb luck is what you need to succeed in the world of selling cars. Try to feed your family off a uncertain job such as that. Most ppl become what they hate. I quit before even had the desire to take advantage of ppl. ( but not that you ask me old guy having a flash back)

Salesmen are universally shitty everywhere, there is no way you can say it's the reason the Toyobaru isn't meeting targets unless you imply in the same breath that it's affecting the entire industry. I dread stepping foot onto a dealership to do anything other than buy an oil filter or oem part from a car they stopped selling before I was out of grade school.

Vending machines and ordering online can't come fast enough. Elon Musk save us please. It took me four hours to buy my car, fuck if I know why. I knew what I wanted, the car was 'pure price' I qualified for the financing and I turned down all their bullshit add ons. Four hours. The only positive is he knew he didn't have to 'sell' me on the car so he didn't say anything stupid like at the other dealerships.

I can say without a doubt I've known more about every car I've looked at throughout my years except this one Mini Cooper salesman named Chris I dealt with a couple years ago. He was the most passionate and knowledgeable car guy I've ever met period. He himself owned a 2002 Cooper S with 297whp. He took me out in it and that shopping experience became a couple of the best hours of my automotive life. Sometimes you get lucky :)

Hyundai dealership let me know the Veloster Turbo was a RWD, twin turbo, STI eater. Then I showed them my STI.

Ford dealership let me know my twin turbo STI was a beast.

Mercedes dealership thought I was driving a Volvo? Because STI wagon.

That article title should be "People Don't Really Care About Their Job"

h4nh 03-07-2014 09:45 PM

LOL I had the same experience with the Subaru dealership. I asked what the difference between an FRS and BRZ and he said the BRZ was a much better car and FRS was total crap.

Rican_D 03-07-2014 09:52 PM

Vast majority of the time the salespeople at dealerships have no clue as to what they are selling. Now in the case of my FR-S the sales guy was am enthusiast who owned a red GT-R R35 and had it at the shop doing engine and tranny work to have it at the 800-900 HP range lol.
