First service from dealership
Hi, I need some tips on my first service. I apologize for the long post
I've search the forum for tips, but there's no topic on the first "service" provided by the dealer, just first oil change and fluid change. This is my first new car, all my previous cars was bought second hand around 10k km. so all I know is to change the engine oil every 5000km and service according to dealership dates. So what does my initial complementary service include? Is simply a oil change or more? When should I do this? My brz is at 1500km right now, and to be honest I did a horrible break in. Before reading any thing on a forum, I picked up my car from another city so I drove back 3 hours on cruise control, so I don't exceed 4000rpm. Then I found out that was very bad and the car should be ran hard so after I reach 600km I started hitting 6000rpm about twice a day. I've only redlined it once till now (1500km). Is this really bad for the car? Should I do a oil change my self first at 2000km? Then do my initial service around 3000km or 4000km at dealership? What other fluid oil need to be changed? Normally, at most dealers, that will include an engine oil and filter change and checking fluid levels. I buy into that he newer manufacturing processes for engines don't allow as many "shavings" to be generated by a new engine. As far as going "all out", that would be more dictated by the number of miles (1,000 is recommended) than the age of the oil. As far as the header and the cat back exhaust install, I would see no problem with installing the cat back exhaust. I just don't know about the header ..... (others may wish to comment). Not ready a helpful reply I'm afraid, but why wouldn't all these "engine shavings" be picked up by the filter? Isn't that what it's there for?

IMO, the worst thing that you can do when you're breaking in a new car is to use cruise control because you need to vary your engine rpm's. Hitting redline a few times is a good thing.
No, you do not need to do an early oil change to get rid of any metal shavings. Used oil analyses posted here show that the car doesn't break in any more quickly doing one oil change in 5k miles vs. three oil changes in 7,500 miles. IIRC, all Subaru's in Canada are required to follow the "severe" service interval so be careful not to extend your oil change interval too far. IMO, that's way too conservative but you need to follow what Subaru Canada requires for minimum service intervals. I would strongly recomend that you get your first oil change sooner rather than later. I changed the oil at 1900 miles and it was way dirty. Thats after a mellow break in period, and maybe a handful of redline pulls. Dirty! I would say maybe 2000km is a good time to do it. For those that are actually going till 7500km or miles or whatever to do your first change I hope your car is a lease.

Black oil is NORMAL. It means the oil is doing its job of holding contaminants in suspension. Oil will also naturally change color after a short time from brown/tannish clear to black just b/c of the heat. So, no, your oil wasn't "dirty", it was just fine and didn't need changing that soon. |
