First service from dealership
 

Hi, I need some tips on my first service. I apologize for the long post

I've search the forum for tips, but there's no topic on the first "service" provided by the dealer, just first oil change and fluid change. This is my first new car, all my previous cars was bought second hand around 10k km. so all I know is to change the engine oil every 5000km and service according to dealership dates.

So what does my initial complementary service include? Is simply a oil change or more? When should I do this? My brz is at 1500km right now, and to be honest I did a horrible break in. Before reading any thing on a forum, I picked up my car from another city so I drove back 3 hours on cruise control, so I don't exceed 4000rpm. Then I found out that was very bad and the car should be ran hard so after I reach 600km I started hitting 6000rpm about twice a day. I've only redlined it once till now (1500km). Is this really bad for the car?

Should I do a oil change my self first at 2000km? Then do my initial service around 3000km or 4000km at dealership? What other fluid oil need to be changed?

Now, don't get all tangled up in your underwear about servicing your car.

At about 7,500 miles (for US cars) take it into the dealer for it's first "service".
Normally, at most dealers, that will include an engine oil and filter change and checking fluid levels.

Now, wasn't that easy .... :)

PS - don't fret about "your" break in proceedure ..... these engines are pretty tough ...;)

So your saying I don't need a oil change till about after 10,000 kms? Don't I have to change the oil, to get rid of the engine shavings?
Just making sure, so no need for any change till after 10,000 kms?

And I also have headers and cat back exhaust, is it a problem to install these before my initial service?

Well, JayDee, my drivers manual says to change the crankcase oil and filter every 7,500 miles or 7.5 months, whichever comes first. Under severe conditions, every 3,750 miles or 3.75 months.

There are two basic schools of thought about when to do the first oil change ..... old school - after the first 1,000 miles or so; new school, follow the manual (7,500 miles). I buy into that he newer manufacturing processes for engines don't allow as many "shavings" to be generated by a new engine.

As far as going "all out", that would be more dictated by the number of miles (1,000 is recommended) than the age of the oil.

As far as the header and the cat back exhaust install, I would see no problem with installing the cat back exhaust. I just don't know about the header ..... (others may wish to comment).

Might want to tell them not to wash your car. I got mine back with swirls.

Humfrs, so maybe I'll get mine changed around 5000 miles. Im very close too 1000 miles, I'm at about 800 now, been hitting around 6000rpm tops, can't wait till I can redline! :thumb up:

I hope then headers won't matte cause, they're coming in before the catback, and I just can't wait haha

Not ready a helpful reply I'm afraid, but why wouldn't all these "engine shavings" be picked up by the filter? Isn't that what it's there for?

IMO, the worst thing that you can do when you're breaking in a new car is to use cruise control because you need to vary your engine rpm's. Hitting redline a few times is a good thing.

No, you do not need to do an early oil change to get rid of any metal shavings. Used oil analyses posted here show that the car doesn't break in any more quickly doing one oil change in 5k miles vs. three oil changes in 7,500 miles.

IIRC, all Subaru's in Canada are required to follow the "severe" service interval so be careful not to extend your oil change interval too far. IMO, that's way too conservative but you need to follow what Subaru Canada requires for minimum service intervals.

I would strongly recomend that you get your first oil change sooner rather than later. I changed the oil at 1900 miles and it was way dirty. Thats after a mellow break in period, and maybe a handful of redline pulls. Dirty! I would say maybe 2000km is a good time to do it. For those that are actually going till 7500km or miles or whatever to do your first change I hope your car is a lease.

QFT, I went in for tails replacement. They washed my car without asking! DA FUG! I checked and got swirls.

I've done a ton of reading on this topic and this just isn't true at all.

The oil that comes with your car is an Idemitsu synthetic with more additives than any oil you can buy. These extra additives are meant to help with engine break in far beyond the first 1000 miles. By changing your oil before 7500 miles, you're doing your engine more harm than good.

I'm not sure about you, but I trust the engineers who work for Subaru/Toyota and the guys at Blackstone Labs over the kids at my local Jiffy Lube.

How do you know it was dirty? UOA came back with something like "should have changed it sooner" or something?

Black oil is NORMAL. It means the oil is doing its job of holding contaminants in suspension. Oil will also naturally change color after a short time from brown/tannish clear to black just b/c of the heat.

So, no, your oil wasn't "dirty", it was just fine and didn't need changing that soon.

Damn... I should of read the forum before I picked up the car, the sale person just said: not over 4000rpm and under 110km/h. so since I picked up the car 4 hours away from home, and I was so eager to speed on the highway back, so I got my friend to just cruise control all the way... :cry: Now that I know, I should of just floored it all the way home.
