I hate bicyclists.....

I parked my car last night to go to a haircut appt. When I barely cracked open the door, a bicyclist took out my door with the window glass shattering in my face. He rode waaaay to close to the parked cars on a HUGE and WIDE street with no traffic.

The hinges are overextended and cannot close. Luckily I was able to get it towed to my friend's warehouse close by to the body shop I was going to use.

SFPD wrote me a ticket even when I wasn't at fault. Insurance is taking care of it. But it s*cks.

How is it any diffrent if you opened your door in front of another car? You have a mirror for a reason. Technically you moved (your door) into his path and hit him and that's most likely why you recieved a ticket. You opening your door into a cyclist is like stepping out infront of a moving vehicle. He has the right of way. Same with motorcycles. You're lucky you didnt kill him.

It sucks but the person opening the door is 100 percent at fault by law in California. Hope the insurance hike isn't to bad.

"CA Vehicle Code 22517.
No person shall open the door of a vehicle on the side available to moving traffic unless it is reasonably safe to do so and can be done without interfering with the movement of such traffic, nor shall any person leave a door open on the side of a vehicle available to moving traffic for a period of time longer than necessary to load or unload passengers."

:-( Sorry about your door, but...

A cyclist is injured by a car every 10 minutes in the US. Twice a day a cyclist is killed. He was probably riding close to parked cars because he has experience with drivers breaking the law and not avoiding cyclists by 3 feet, and having a three to ten thousand pound hunk of lethal metal pass you breathtakingly close is definitely pucker inducing.

Surely he will adjust his cycling and ride further away from parked cars, at least until someone kills him because he's on the opposite side of the bike lane now.

i personally hate bicyclists. Especially those on mountain 1 lane roads

I don't mind sharing the road with bicyclists, I just get irritated when they don't abide by the same traffic laws that I have to.

they have every right to be there, just like you. Yeah it's an inconvenience to have to slow down from your bitchin' touge run and pass them with care, but whatever, maybe the world doesn't revolve around me.

I suppose I should get off the car forums and expect the world to be as I remember it back in the days before you had to lock your front door when you were out playing with your friends.

I personally hate one lane mountain roads, where you can't see 50 feet around that corner due to dirt or trees, and where someone in a car, truck, or bicycle might come around at a ridiculous speed and either kill themselves over my car, or kill me pushing me off the road. I wouldn't think of riding my bike on a one lane road unless it was closed to vehicles, and I get nervous driving them.

I'm sure ndsleep612 was expecting to vent some frustration and find some solidarity among fellow drivers here on the forums, but as a long time driver and a part time cyclist, all I can do is hope those of you who hate me won't kill me out of spite when I'm out there. That really is a bummer about your door and window, and I feel for you, but all I can imagine is where on my body the window is trying to penetrate as I'm smashing into it face first.

bkblitzed 02-26-2014 10:19 PM

Sure they have every right, but when they're bombing down the mountain going over into the other lanes and shit, that's when it becomes a hazard. Bicyclist don't stop at stop signs, or even obey traffic laws.

leicaboss 02-26-2014 10:25 PM

I'm a cyclist myself so I'm torn.

However, what I really hate are people blasting by stop signs and red lights and the ones that ride at night without any lights - it's really tough to spot them and I've nearly hit a few of those idiots.

Drivers force many cyclists to the edge of the road because they are impatient or drive dangerously close. The greatest fear for urban riders is getting doored - lots of people don't pay attention and swing the door open without double checking. I always check, you never know!

I hate bicyclist that cant freaking stay on the sidewalk, no wonder you guys get hit by cars all the time. Bicycle lanes are the dumbest things ever created, its not like anyone uses the sidewalk in the US... no one fricken walks anywhere. So make use of them and get your ass on the sidewalk.

Oh and OP, let me guess there was a sidewalk to your right but the biker was too smart to be on it?

technically bicyclist can't to be on the sidewalk which is retarded.

Hey guys, my car was parked with engine shut off. The street was wide with no traffic. I checked the mirror for cars and didn't see anything. Most of the bicyclists I see stay away from the parked cars close to the sidewalk. This guy had his earphones on and was probably daydreaming too close to parked cars. It was just a frigging bad day.

The interesting part was the tow truck driver who gave some excuse that my insurance "wouldn't" approve any destination changes to where I wanted my FRS to be towed to. Since it was after 6pm, the body shops were closed and I needed a place to store the car since the door wouldn't close. The tow truck drive was going to stash it at some open area storage site and bring it in the next day. For all I know, he would have drifted it and let the rain soak the interior.

To be fair for all of us car drivers, there needs to be a change in federal laws requiring bicyclists to have insurance. This is almost as bad as the non-insurance guys driving in the 80's.
