Places you cruise around for fun/leisure?
I live in San Jose, anyone from around the area want to share some fun places to drive to/cruise around?
Whenever I have some free time I always enjoy taking a drive to: Fremont Older Open Space Preserve in Saratoga, CA (pretty short drive, but driving around the mountains there are always fun) For a little longer drive... Vista Point (highway 9 is always fun) Santa Cruz (I enjoy the turns on highway 17) Highway 9, then at the stop, turn right onto Skyline Blvd, and if you keep going on Skyline Blvd you'll see a Vista Point with an amazing view. Stevens Canyon Rd What else am I missing out on? |
Hwy 130 is interesting, but narrow. I go drive up and down Metcalf Rd; it is really short, but only a few mins from where I live. I have been meaning to get out and drive the other side of the valley.

take a drive up mt. hamilton up to lick's observatory?
|
These are pretty short and tame, but they're perfect little traffic detours for my daily commute so I frequent them: Niles Canyon Rd, Palomares Rd, Crow Canyon Rd (between 580 and 680)

Hwy 130 up and over Mt. Hamilton is one of my favorites. Definitely have to use caution there though, there are spots where you can push it a little and spots where there is no room for error or you are going off the edge of a cliff. For a longer drive continue all the way up out into the middle of nowhere and back into the back of Livermore via Mines.
Sierra Rd and Felter Rd are fun but short run just above San Jose. We did that as a group a few weekends back and it connects back to Calaveras which in turn connects to Niles Canyon Rd and Palomares Rd. Which in turn can take you towards Redwood Rd... yeah lots of fun drives around here. :) |
Highway 9 at night is my favorite. Generally don't run into others driving around. Only thing is deer are out and about...
|
Highway 92 going towards Half Moon Bay is always fun.

This thread is reading just like the first few pages of the DRIVE chat thread lol. My personal favorite is this little known road called Ridgecrest blvd that takes you to the peak of Mt. Tam, the scenery is just unreal. A very close second are my local twisty roads up in the Eastbay hills (Redwood, Pinehurst, Grizzly Peak, etc.)

Since I'm nearby, my favorite loop is Hwy 9 > 35 > 84 (or reverse), then take 280S back home.
