Ah, no, a sportback with a glass roof would weigh more than a convertible FR-S...

Toyota said the AS1 was designed for a convertible from the beginning. We shall see soon how much more it weighs, if it is only like 150 pounds more, all is good.

No it is ugly and with a targa roof you have to get out of the car to remove or put it on.

Keep the car a coupe or make a optional real convertible\roadster with a powered top. Nobody wants to get out to raise or lower their top..

If Nissan can do it, so can Toyota.

For example...
370Z coupe 3245 pounds
370Z roadster 3479 pounds (powered softtop convertible)

IS 250C 3840 pounds (powered hardtop convertible)
IS 250 3435 pounds

Weight is partly irrelevant in this case; no one is racing a convertible when a hard-top coupe is available. However, a GT86/FR-S/BRZ convertible is going to be a harder sell when competing against the Audi A3, MINI, ANY small BMW, 370z, Mustang, Camaro, etc. etc. A sportback with a glass roof won't too heavy for the chassis, and the possibility of moving the rear seats back a few inches with a taller roofline will increase utility and family friendliness.

Want open air? Get a motorcycle.

Now, who do I have to throw money at to get a hatchback FR-S?

I have a great idea!!! If they can make a power convertible... Why not make a power targa, where it slides back & you still can have visibility threw the rear view mirror. How? Because the targa top is mostly glass (like a tC roof look).

Both German Auto Bild as well as Dutch Autoweek report Toyota having confirmed the introduction of a convertible to them:

Now Autovisie reports that a spokesperson for Scion in the US also confirmed a convertible

I still think the hatch would be a huge boost to the practicality of the twins.
It would also solve the issue of rear-seat headroom, and adding cargo capacity.
Plus the hot hatch lovers out there would go nuts. Heck, even though they were aiming for 53/47 weight split, maybe a Hatch would put more weight in the rear.

It doesn't look as bad as I thought...

blu_ 05-10-2012 07:06 PM

Yeah they have been dropping this rumor for a while. I don't know how I feel about it, because I really don't think their is evidence out there that shows this car was designed to be a convertible from the start. I would put money on marketing people jumping on the bandwagon and making the claims that this will happen and the chassis wont suffer because of it.
