Exhaust smells like a burnt marshmallow.
Ok well, maybe it doesn't smell THAT bad. So about 2 hours ago I installed my 2.5" perrin cbe and took it out for a quick test drive, (extremely excited btw) but upon pulling up to a stop light I got a fairly noticeable gush of an almost 'sweet' burning smell which seemed to be coming up from under the car. Needless to say I kinda freaked out a little hah. So I pulled over at a gas station immediately to check it out, and as I came to a stop I heard a slight intermittent squeak noise for maybe 2 minutes before it stopped!
So I busted out my phone and did a quick google search for possible reasons as to what was causing this before I drove it any further and got a few mixed reviews. One popular theory is that it was "that new exhaust smell" where manufacturer oils were burning off after being used for the first time. I'm a serious n00b when it comes to cars, but I'm not sure I buy that explanation, especially after hearing the squeaky noise. (although it hasn't squeaked since those brief few minutes) Is this to be expected when first driving a new exhaust? Or did I fk something up during install? Have any of yous guys/gals had any issues like this? Also, during install I made sure that none of the piping came into contact with the differential or any other parts, although it was somewhat of a tight fit. |
Stuff getting properly hot for the first time, everything needs to settle, stuff expands and contracts, all kinds of residue burns off.... Don't worry about it!
My car is at 34.000km and still smell funny after a spirited drive. |
You might also want to check the cam plate leak issue. It started on my car after about 3000miles. I now have on order a billet cam plate from Raceseng.

It just means you bought a brand new exhaust system ... After a few drives, it'll all be gone. Don't lose sleep over it. ;)

It was like that for a good few days before it went away. |
Just installed Invidia Front-pipe(resonated) + exhaust and I started getting a burnt smell. Took it to a muffler shop and they tightened everything, no leaks. But on my drive home I still got that burnt smell. Give it a few days??

Yep, it's just burning coatings off the metal. It'll take a few days.
