CARB supercharger inquiries
 

Hey guys I'm from Milwaukee Wisconsin which uses the obdii for emissions so i believe i would need a carb approve kit. I've been lurking through the forum for a few weeks now but i can't seem to find dyno charts for the carb approve sc kits, i did find a supercharger comparison thread but it wasn't carb tune.
I am open to any of the SC kits but i would like know the gains to be had with just the carb tune that comes with it. Money isn't a concern and i can't get a costume tune because of the fear of not passing emissions. So if you could be so kind as to point me in the right direction i would greatly appreciate it.

Exactly what i was looking for guys, it seems to me they both produce the same gains with a carb tune, right? With that said, am i able to do upgrades and get a costume tune and then switch to the carb tune when it comes time for emissions?

are you sure about that? CARB stands for California Air Resource Board. Unless Wisconsin adopted California's standards completely (which I highly doubt), you likely don't need a carb certified kit.

I also thought CARB was California only... All other states have varying requirements for emissions, and emissions testing. It would be worth looking into what your state requires, although if it can pass Cali requirements, you're probably OK with it as well.

All you need is a tune that won't throw any codes that turn your check engine light on. The Milwaukee Metropolitan area is actually more strict than CARB, and the law states that any intake modification is illegal, but they'll only pop the hood if you fail the OBD test multiple times.

Based on blower types, power is going to be similar. You're limited by the octane and catalytic converters, as well as, level of boost and efficiency of the kit. I wouldn't focus on the absolute numbers as every dynamometer will read a little differently. The increase in power from a SC base kit (generally CARB legal) will be what you're looking for. :thumbsup:

You can also do upgrades if you want and get a custom tune. Keep in mind, you won't be able to pass that sniffer test with no cats. :bonk:

Good to know Midwest laws. I just got back from Michigan and Chicago visiting a few friends. Roads aren't as bad as I thought and I drove around in a rental Yaris with 2-3 inches/hr of snowfall on all season tires. I'm sure the potholes are stupid ridiculous come spring time though. Lots of tunnels means you guys are ridiculously blessed to do WOT pulls whenever you feel like it with your exhausts. :)

No,Im not sure that's why i used a subjective phrase such as"I believe", and it would be great if i could pass emissions with non carb approve mods, but i don't know what i can and can't get away with in Milwaukee. If anyone knows pls do tell.

Yep, we've just gone from weeks of single digit temps to nearly 50 degrees yesterday, and the roads are completely trashed with potholes. It's a common saying in the midwest that there are two seasons; Winter and Road Construction.

Regarding intake mods being illegal, I did some quick searching and couldn't actually find such a law, but I know my dad had to de-turbo his Impreza back in 2004/5 to pass emissions because they popped the hood after 2 OBD failures and told him the intake has to be completely stock. Milwaukee has gotten rid of the actual emissions test stations over the last couple years and now the testing is just done by auto shops, so maybe they're not as strict anymore.

PS: I'm looking very hard at the JRSC and may very well be contacting CSG about it once my warranty is up, it's encouraging to see how much R&D you guys are doing with that kit.

Emission requirements are always a bit confusing because they do not only vary from state by state, but can vary county to county as well. For instance, in Seattle, WA if you live within the main counties for the city, you need to pass an OBD-II check, which only is going to check if you have no codes in your system. They don't care what the emissions are actually like. If you are outside of those counties, they don't care period, and they don't check.

So you may be better to check directly with your DMV for the regulations pertaining to the county your car is registered in.

Yea saw a lot of potholes in funny places. Avoiding them wasn't too bad, but I did purposely hit a few just to see how bad they were. I love using that e-brake though...hehe
