Why all the "big" turbo kits @ low boost

Why is there no 300whp max turbo kits out there? Or is there? Seems silly to run 10 psi on a 25+psi capable turbo. All you are is enjoying lag and barely in the turbo's efficiency range...

I'm looking for a 16g/18g sized kit where are they?

Full Blown has a nice list of Turbos that are optional that you can upgrade to. Most of these units can be tuned for more power, but without internals there is a limit. Of course we can throw a big turbo on it, and just let it ride, but I'm sure you don't want a blown motor of course.

Just another reason why full blown has several turbo options instead of just one or two set turbos. Some guys want the option to upgrade later down the road when they do want internals, some guys are just looking for 300rwhp and be done with it.

I hope this is a troll post.

My kit is running 16psi with approximately 325 whp (Treadstone kit with BW 6258 EFR turbo).

Boost is pressure. Pressure on internals not designed for added pressure = boom, OR rod to the knee.

There are benefits to running a larger turbo on less boost. PSI is a measure of pressure not volume, so say 10psi on a little turbo is not the same volume as 10psi from a large turbo.

Also if you have to wring out a little turbo to make that 10psi it is going to introduce more heat into the charge then a big turbo that doesn't have to work as hard.

So a street car running pump gas and daily running around it can be advantageous.

If you want a smaller turbo kit look at the AVO or Greddy

AVO uses a turbo similar to 18g.

now, the "big" turbos on low boost are not proving to be too laggy. There are benefits to them as already said, lower charge temps, more HP per psi, etc.

the reason is because this car is very knock limited on pump gas, and a lot of people don't have or want e85. bigger turbos flow more air for a given boost pressure. so you make more power on less boost, all while moving cooler air which in turns helps to raise the knock threshold. combined with direct injection and 12.5:1 compression, lag is hardly an issue (the 35r i just tuned, with very little optimization, spools 14psi @ 4.5k rpm for instance). these cars can spool a much larger turbo much quicker than what you'd expect if you come from the evo/wrx world.

beyond that, you have the overhead to produce craaaaaazy power on e85 should you choose to. larger turbos are also easier on drivetrain parts, as they tend to ramp in the torque curve more progressively than a smaller turbo. lots of immediate torque at low rpm does little more than turn tires into vapor and break stuff.

so there are lots of reasons, and having bought a 'small' turbo (gtx2867r) and tuned larger ones, i'll be swapping mine out for something much larger very soon. the benefits far outweigh any perceived drawback, most of which are just a consequence of applying common knowledge that doesn't apply to the fa20. this engine breaks rules.

*sniff* *sniff* do I smell a GTX4294R? :D I hope so ;) lol jk. I think he likes traction and an engine that works without retard timing...lol

I'm torn between the 3076r and 3582r. I guess it'll come down to what will fit with minimal modification.

cdrazic93 02-17-2014 09:12 PM

Lets see, 3582, more overhead, although the 3076 provides quite a bit of overhead itself, both sound like jet engines...3076 may spool earlier, i think? the 3076 sounds like a better all around option to me.

Ironsquid 02-17-2014 09:14 PM

james you can have my 35r im done with it, too small, going 42101 twin scroll

3576 then, I was just looking myself

That's what I'm thinking, but id hate to have to upgrade again :).
