Full engine teardown picture thread. Taking requests. (PICTURE HEAVY!)

As many if you know I had suffered engine failure many months ago. I have finally managed to take the time to do a full engine tear down. Every last bolt has been removed, tagged, and bagged. I figured as crawford was the only one to do this previously and they were directly told not to post any further due to not paying for sponsor status I would forward the offer to take any photos that anyone may want to see of any components before I re-assemble over the coming weeks!

I will be taking a few standard pictures of the damaged components in my engine but if there is anything that anyone is just curious about I can attempt to arrange to take quality photos of them. I shoot professionally and will be setting up a small setup for snapping some pictures of things. I'll try to get as many requests as possible but I am also fairly busy over the coming weeks.

I will attempt to take pictures over the weekend / early next week. So please post any requests you may want in this thread!

P.S. full build thread coming soon! :)

Okay I did a quick lighting setup in the kitchen... Here are a few photos of some failed parts.

Piston #3: seized rings and many pits

This is where the rings are compressed and seized

Misc abrasions signs of friction

Piston #4: Lots of pits, note the edges being discolored
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...e/_B9A0474.jpg

Piston #2: Failed cylinder. Multiple impact marks. Piston touched head & valve. Exhaust valves are bent in this cylinder. Rod broke below wrist pin and put 2 large holes and one very small hole in the block. Rings are seized and face seems to be slightly warped. Piston contains many cracks.

Note that the piston seems slightly warped from this angle

Piston #2 Bearings

Misc DI's (Sorry they got dirty POST removal!)

Spark plugs: In order from cylinder 1 on the left to cylinder 4 on the right. I may have mixed up 3 & 4 but they look nearly identical. It is quite obvious which cylinder failed in this photo... :)

Note the injector clamps i installed on the vacuum hoses that came loose during forced induction. These are not factory.

Reserved #2.

How do the piston tops look or was there too much shrapnel in the chambers to tell? From your review thread it sounds like you would have been detting for a while so i would expect the piston top to be pitted...

Yes quite a few pits, especially around the piston edging. My engine let go at a low revolution luckily so the shrapnel was minimal. All four pistons are "mostly" in tact. One piston did slap a cylinder head and bent a valve. However it was minor. I actually just noticed the valve was bent as I was posting this.

Two pistons has seized rings, one piston had damage from hitting a head, and all four had pits. Although considering the conditions it was actually a lot better than I expected! I'll have photos of the pistons likely tonight. I just have to finish up a few things at work right now and then go pickup some cloth or something to shoot against.

pics of heads? better yet, while you have them off could somebody in the community maybe help you have them flow tested (unless you already have contacts for that)?

Cams info? Ton's of speculation on those here on the forum without much info.

I know you are busy and on a budget so if you can't do that stuff no worries. Just thought I would throw it out there.

I'm interested in seeing your build. Which pistons and rods are you going with? Are you doing anything to the block, heads, valve-train, cams, intake & manifolds, etc?

Just for reference here is a thread I found regarding a FA20 build: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28820

Thank you for this - much appreciated by the community. How do the DI seals look on your car (if anything is left of them)? I assume when the car was functional that you shifting quite a bit post 4-5K rpm?

X2 on the heads...

Also intake manifold from several angles...do you also happen to have the crankshaft out?

A pic of the DI seals wouldn't hurt either...

What's it cost to get this done these days? I would have to ask some friends as I don't have friends locally to do this. I'm def on a budget ATM as the build is becoming costly but I'm open to the idea.

I spent quite an amount if time over 4k. Seals looked good considering I did have DI pop pre-tune/boost which went away after flashing. I will get detailed pictures of all four for you. One DI has minor damage on what looks like a washer at the base before the seal. May have been from removal as we really had to tug to remove the DI from the cylinder with the failure in it.

A friend has the crank shaft I gave it to him. I will ask him to return it for photo this weekend for you. And every boot has been removed from he engine. Exception two Allen plugs in the block it's self. I even removed the cover from unused the bell housing in the back of the block.

I asked a friend to get me photos from the evening during tear down. I'll post some of those up when I get then. If I get some time I'll start with manifold, pistons, DI system tonight. :)

Lots of parts to list. Custom speced CP @ 11.5:1 CR with coated tops and upgraded wrist pins. Modified Carrillo 1200hp h rods... Upgraded valve springs likely upgraded valves now that some are bent and I'll be treating a number of oem components. I have spent months sourcing parts and doing research it'd been a pain! But I am getting closer. I still need to buy a few parts. I won't be shooting for the sky as I don't want to do a custom transmission and diff setup ATM as it's quite costly. But it should put down nice numbers. Basically whatever my turbo maxes out at. Or the fuel system whichever comes first. :)

Sounds bad ass! So you're getting rid of the supercharger and going with a turbo setup ?

Figure ill give it a try. If I don't like it I'll likely go back to a vortech race unit and just raise up the rev limit so I still get rational MPG. :)

I just want to be able to give a fair comparison to both on this car. I honestly absolutely loved my supercharger and I swear by the setup I had. But for the money im investing into a bottom end I feel a turbo will better suite now that I can self tune. I am more biased towards using the supercharger though I feel it fits this car better.

You won't regret it bro! :party0030: What are your HP/TQ goals?
