Is Tomei 60s Really this loud??
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4m652NpMNyM"]GT86 Drive by Night - Tomei 60s Catback - YouTube[/ame]
Hi people, I am thinking about buying a Tomei 60s catback and had watched several videos on youtube. this is the most recent one I found there, it seems a bit louder than I thought (a lot louder?)... any comments? or owner can share some info? thanks a lot!!! |
he probably has headers, a test pipe, a over pipe lol, if you get just the catback it won't sound like this, search ft86speedfactory on you tube, they have good videos of the type 60s
|
My local shop has this setup. Super loud.
|
He's definitely running a test pipe or headers with his system. The catback itself doesn't sound that raspy.
I'm currently running a 60s with the rest of exhaust stock, and its really tolerable for a DD. But it would realistically be too loud if you were to upgrade your headers and test pipe/overpipe. I'll probably be switching to the invidia q300 or perrin resonated once I upgrade my full exhaust |
Tomei 60s on an otherwise stock exhaust sounds amazing! I love mine.
|
Depends on how many cats there are. The less kitty cats, the louder the hungry dogs will bark.
|
I believe just the 60s alone with everything else in the exhaust stock, won't be as loud as the setup from the aforementioned video. With that said, any other modification done onto the exhaust with the 60s attached, will yield significant loud noises. Honestly, if you're going to spend around $1k for an exhaust, buy something that has a dual exhaust tip. It is your money in the end- just a suggestion.

thank you for your suggestion here. I love Tomei for it's weight saving and material used. However, I don't really track or anthing so might not even feel this weight reduction. I got a question though, any benefit of dual exits compared to the single? besides the look. maybe some aero? how about the flow? I keep feeling that single exit seems to have better flow? again, that's just what it seems like to me. no backup datas here. thank you all for the input. I love this car, just wish it could sound a bit better from the factory to make it more like a sport car haha.. |
I agree with you in regards to the weight reduction and better flow of single tipped exhausts. My opinion and view in this topic of double or single canister exhaust tips is go with "the one that looks the best to you and the one that came with the factory design (dual canister tips in this regards)." I'm pretty sure there must have been a reason why Subaru and Toyota insisted on the dual canister tip design rather than a single canister tip design, perhaps for better aero, performance, or aesthetics- who knows! Bottom line for me, I'd stick with the dual look because the factory came with the dual look. Just to steer this aside, what are your goals for your car? Force Induction or N/A? If N/A, you might best start with the headers first. Move down from the headers to the axleback, to determine the best sound tolerance for yourself. I'm staying N/A, and am saving to buy a Catted UEL header in the future (probably the FT86 one).
If you want my honest opinion, just let everything in the exhaust stay stock and delete the muffler in your axleback or add a straight pipe. (there are cheap straight pipes for under $300 on ebay) Just start doing your suspension first- tires, wheels, coilovers/springs, and control arms. After that, then hit the exhaust portions of your car. I regret spending $1.3k on my CATBACK (mid pipe + axle back) alone and neglecting my suspension portion of my car. Next mod to my car is definitely wheel and tires. |

First, thanks for your reply. I was also looking for a catted UEL header before mainly for the boxer sound. Then I did some research online, some said UEL is not good because of the uneven exhaust heat issue, but some said that they have UEL for thousands and thousands miles with zero issue. I mean one problem I see with modded header is that aftermarket doesnt seem to come with the heat shield that factory provided. I mean the heat shield is there for a reason I thought, or factory could have easily removed it for the cost benefit. I am planning on keeping the car for a long time, I live in Taiwan and my family usually use the car for about 15 years or so. another thing is that dealers here are really really not familiar with this car/engine, and so do I, I am not a mechanic myself either. I am keeping my car as NA for its lifetime service. As for now, I am only looking for a catback that will last long and sound good when reving while not bothering people cruising around. I am sadly giving up my header mod option only because I am afraid of the warranty and issues down the road here in Taiwan. |
Damn that needs a cat and resonator. Sounds like complete shit. Don't be that guy.

Right, that is just way too race-like haha:eyebulge: |
same as any other cat-back, if you just do the cat-back and leave the rest stock it will totally manageable. Once you remove the cat from the front pipe it gets a bit louder, once you do a cat-less header it turns into a raspy rice monster. So far the only civil cat-back's for a full cat-less car (aftermarket cat-less header, and cat-less front pipe) are the Q300 or the resonated perrin 2.5. Im sure a couple of the suitcase muffler replacements will also be tame, like the legamax.
|
Subaru and Toyota did dual exhaust cause every sports car has dual exhaust now...
I don't see the reason to have a dual exhaust for a 2.0L 4cyl engine...except to fill the other hole in the bumper now. |
I feel the same way. When I had my s2k, I went with a single exit exhaust and left the other side open.
|
The 60s isn't that loud he definitely has a modded front pipe, header, or both. I own a 60s with a dual resonated hks front pipe and on a cold start and above 4.5k it's LOUUUDDDD but once the car is warm(exhaust also seems to quiet down when it's warm) you can hear the exhaust note slightly . I can hold a conversation on the phone (over bt) and with a passenger at cruising speeds 60-75mph

thanks for sharing!!! I am probably only going for the catback for that extra sporty sound!! but again, if I am the only one living on an empty island, I would go for tomei catback + tomei straight pipe hahaha:D |
I heard this exhaust in person. It's beastly loud. Great for waking up the dead from their tombstones.

Really? do you mean the 60R or 60S? I am planning on the 60S because it is probably not that that loud...... I am only looking at the catback. |
I have the 60s and the tomei front pipe...it's LOUD!

It's a guy from the French board. He's got a secondary decat (non resonated front pipe).

Just get the 60R. Yes it'll be loud but if you don't drive like a maniac every time you get on the accelerator, then you'll be fine. Also, with the 60r you'll be able to get that sweet Boxer Rumble that these engines make! I'm not sure about the laws in Taiwan but I'm pretty sure you'll be fine.

Thank you for sharing. I mean I don't really know the law here as well. Mostly I just don't want to bother people with the exhaust note when under around 3k. In the city I usually drive under 3k, but on mountain road or so can be up to 6.5k this is why I am looking to buy the 60s because according to the reviews, it is not much louder than stock when cruising and again pretty loud when wot. I just wish there are more videos of the 60S online. :bonk: |
Quick video I took of a cold start today. This is the 60s with the tomei front pipe.

Oh, and the silencer is in.

wow thank you!!! pretty loud start up with the straight pipe. has your exhaust changed color yet? I think titanium exhaust does change color overtime. good to know that 60s came with a silencer as well!! :thanks: |
Quote:
Color didn't change yet, only been on a few days. Here is a video without the silencer and a couple revs (3k-4k). Didn't want to rev it any higher, my neighbor hates me. Lol [ame]http://youtu.be/IFEgy3esNYA[/ame] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
@ATESIX, could you upload a drive by and a higher rev video? without the silencer

haha your neighbor hates you:happyanim: thank for sharing again. I can hear some rattling during the idle not sure if you catch that? but it seems to go away after the rpm is dropped. did you install the straight pipe together with the catback? or different time? |
Finally! someone uploaded videos of the combo tomei 60s with the tomei straight pipe.
now we need an upload with the 60r with the straight pipe! |
Quote:
I'm pretty sure the rattling is coming from the springs. From what I've read, it's common occurrence. I'm really surprised I was the first to post this, thought there would've been a million videos already. BTW, this setup is really, really, loud (at least for me). I can't imagine the 60r, it might sound like Armageddon on wheels! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Lol, that's ridiculous! I installed my 60s and front pipe at the same time, dunno how the 60s sounds by itself. Sometime next month I will post a video of mine with the header (and possibly overpipe) done too.

YES!!! can't wait to see your video again!!! UEL or EL header? =) I feel Tomei will have header as well for frs eventually. Will you consider tomei head to toe? haha:burnrubber: |

I ordered the Openflash header and am considering the Invidia overpipe. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

i'll replace tanabe front pipe by stock front pipe next week, so add me on facebook if you want other video next week with all stock and only tomei catback ( guillaume courcy ) bye bye and go on to show us nice cars like yours ! |
