First winter with my BRZ, noticed this. Anyone else have this rust?

Yup, my exhaust had that on it too when I changed it out last spring/summer. Frame, underbody, suspension, etc all looked completely fine so don't be too worried.

Seems pretty normal for living in a climate that requires road salt during harsh conditions. I used to have an older Toyota for a DD when I lived in Vermont. I lived there for almost 5 years and never had to deal with rust issues. The year after I moved to Maine I noticed everything started going, exhaust, brake lines, control arms. The nearby shop owner told me that Maine uses a very cheap form of road salt that apparently is extremely aggressive towards metal. Seems like Toronto probably uses the same stuff. Take the car to a car wash with an underbody sprayer at least once a month and consider having the underbody treated with some kind of rust preventer (I've seen good long term results from annual oil spray applications)

pretty normal with the exhaust, I guess it's another reason to get an aftermarket exhaust :burnrubber:

My midpipe is almost like that. I live on the west coast. I try to give the car a quick rinse during winter to wash off accumulated salt and debris.

I give my car a good under body rinse at those coin-ops after every snow storm. I also got Corrosion Free rust treatment, and i still get this rust on my pipe.

For those of you that got the same thing, do you think it's going to rust through the pipe?

Worst comes worst, you still have warranty. If it bothers you that much, you can consider replacing your exhaust?

It seems like Subaru cheaped out on the exhaust. My previous car which I owned for 10 years, never even came close to rusting, not even surface rust.

Go every week if I can, for $11 you can't go wrong. Not as good as a hand wash but gets the salt and road crap off the car and most important gives the undercarriage a rinse!

Yep, mine looks like that too. They definitely went the cheap route on the exhaust. Getting it rinsed off repeatedly doesn't help much either, probably because the heat from the exhaust makes it rust that much quicker. The metal also looks completed untreated too at first glance. I doubt it will rust through the pipe anytime soon though. I've seen some of the new forester exhausts looking like this as well. So Subaru is definitely being cheap with their materials here.

Ew. My dads 99 Celica GT's muffler still look good after all these years in the harsh MN winters. Thankful i have a beater for winter months lol.

supramkivtt2jz 02-09-2014 06:40 PM

yea the muffler did that within 3 months of ownership with mine. im rocking the berk track pipe now

roddy 02-09-2014 07:15 PM

It's perfectly normal, and will take many years to rust through. Most likely, the muffler itself or the bolts holding the system on will rot before the pipe ever does. OEM exhaust systems will usually last 7-10 years before rot becomes an issue. It doesn't look pretty, but it's nothing to be worried about.

Didn't mean to imply that rinsing will help with the rust as it won't :)

I was responding to the previous poster about the benefits of taking the car to the wash during the winter!

Obviously water, steel and oxygen do not play well together :bonk:

yup, midpipe to exhaust looked that way. Went Perrin after the winter and did not drive it this winter. Buying a truck when I get home this summer before next winter.
