I have the non-DOT Red Tom's and drive regularly on Long Island and in NYC - no issues with any cops and even passed the annual safety inspection.

dont know why you would have issues.. tom's taillights resemble audi and volkswagen taillights which in a lot of cases are all red too lol

the guy with the blackout tails.. if a cop is right behind you and notices when you brake there isnt much visible light... he will probably pull you over and give you a fix it ticket.. and then nit pick anything else on your car he doesnt like.. tint, loudness of exhaust etc

but for those who want to black out their tail lights good luck on not being rear ended if someone cant clearly see your brake lights or turn signals when they are in use.

heres a trick.... if you leave your lights on they wont notice it as much

Be VERY careful with those black lenses...... Don't get hit from behind!
Your insurance company may have an issue with these lenses. If you are struck from behind (for instance) in an auto accident your insurance company will send an investigator to assess your vehicle. When the investigator discovers that you have modified the lenses (a safety device) by actually changing their color the insurance company may, and have dropped insured clients leaving them liable for injuries, damage, etc. That could be a financial disaster in anyone's life.
Federal safety vehicle standards (FMVSS), and countless state laws mandate tail light lenses be red.
