MotorWeek / Cars.com mention STI in 2014 New Car preview?
 

I was just looking over a video on Jalopnik and was surprised to hear mention of the BRZ STI in the 2014 New Car Preview. Now I don't believe a word of it :lol: but for those interested here in the link.

BRZ is mentioned at 4:03 followed by the WRX.

Notice how they use the concept WRX and BRZ STI parts catalog car in their 2014 "preview."

Trust nothing.

The video was posted back in Nov 2013. Lots has changed since.

Figures, I saw it was posted on Jalopnik yesterday and didn't bother to see when the video itself was actually created. Looked like pretty nice weather for February.

Pretty sure it won't happen anytime soon because the BRZ GT300 is already being used to market the BRZ tS (the order deadline is on March 9th).

There could be another BRZ limited edition from STI down the road like the S40x Legacy and S20x Impreza WRX STI.

It makes more sense to have a STI trim with a different powerplant from FHI for the BRZ when it's time for a refresh (if there would be one).

They're going to have to do some kind of power increase by 2016 with the Nissan IDx confirmed for production and the possibility of competitors like the Kia GT4 Stinger and the on-again-off-again Mazda RX-7 successor all coming out in this segment with similar dimensions, weight, and more power.

I'm thinking no. Mazda cannot afford to do this without Ford holding its hand anymore.

The platform for the new Mazda is the joint project with Alfa Romeo on a new platform for the Alfa Spider and the Mazda Miata. From the start both companies have made it clear that only the platform is shared and besides that both cars will have different engines, drivetrain and transmissions as well as body design. So Mazda could easily decide to build a nother rotary engine on that platform and simply make it one class higher up the chain on cost level by making it another RX.

Competitor's cars don't force a refresh for the very next MY.

If there's going to be an STI trim level with an FI'd 2.0L powerplant, it's going to come along when the model is well and ready for a refresh, and that won't happen for some time yet.

This car hasn't even completed 2 model years yet.

Tada-san has said that Toyota is testing multiple different types of power increases and has been for a long time. Competitors will only force them to release a refresh earlier than they normally would have. During the development of the car it was said it would have a longer than normal life cycle roughly 8-10 years which would put a mid-cycle refresh around 2017-2018. These new competitors could ensure that a 2016 calendar year refresh happens instead of a 2017-2018 one.

I highly doubt they'll do any such thing.

And 8-10 years is hardly longer than normal. Look how long the WRX has been going in the US, and it's well over 10 years old and still going strong.

Speculating on when this car will get a refresh when it isn't even 2 fully MY's old yet is simply foolish speculation whose only purpose is to fuel speculation threads like this one.

And the day that KIA of all people forces Subaru and Toyota to divert their plans is the day that hell freezes over. And Nissa departed the lightweight RWD game long ago. They're still stuck in making JDM-esque USDM muscle cars called the Z-series, and I highly doubt their new IDX will be any sort of class competitor with the twins.

If anything, the twins will encourage Honda to get back into the game. They're the ones to watch for any serious competition to the twins, and I hope they do so. Them and Mazda.

GD WRX was released in 2000, received a refresh in 2002, another facelift/refresh in 2005, and ended production in 2007. = 7 years


GH/GR WRX was released in 2007, received a refresh in 2009, ended production in 2014. = 7 years




A BRZ life cycle of 8-10 years would be longer than normal (i.e. 7 years)
and if they followed the WRX scenario then yes a refresh would be expected after only just 2-3 years. Having potentially more powerful competitors only re-enforces that possibility.

And the GC WRX was around even before then. The WRX has been around for quite a long time.

That means this level of BRZ is probably going to be around for at least 7 years before a refresh comes along. That means MY 2020, since this started at MY 2013, NOT MY 2016.
