BRZ/FRS Crash Test
 

I just found this and thought was scary and interesting.

It did well.

Compared to other cars, this did quite well. It won the "Top Safety Pick" award from the IIHS,even.

Did you notice the rear view mirror fly off (4:00 mark)? Confirms the weakness in the mount we're all complaining about...

It's intentionally weak as it's made to break away so it's not in the way of the airbags or your head...


Anyway, pretty cool to see that, the windshield didn't even crack. Kinda surprised the side curtains didn't go off too.

Always amazed at how delicate and fragile car exteriors have become, yet handle these crashes well.

No side impact - No side curtain deployment

What today’s air bags are designed to do:
• In a frontal impact exceeding a preset threshold, the frontal air bags inflate immediately to help prevent the driver and front passenger from striking the steering wheel, instrument panel and/or windshield.
• In a side impact exceeding a preset threshold:
– Side air bags help to cushion the impact to the driver or front passenger in the area of the chest.
– Curtain air bags cushion the area of the head.


For it's size and weight, the 86 is a remarkably safe 5 Stars

I'm curious how it's all detected as the offset front impact did deploy the curtains in the vids I've seen.


Also seems to depend on the car as I've seen some deploy the curtains to keep people's heads from rolling off the main airbag.

I'd like to see how it does in the new staggered head on collision they are starting to do. Most cars fail it spectacularly and to be honest I wouldn't expect the BRZ to do any better. Having said that...I wouldn't mind seeing it.

Controlled deformation. The cheap bits fly off.

The structure is engineered to convert kinetic energy into heat, noise and a little light by deforming progressively according to the rate at which the momentum needs to be absorbed to limit the maximum negative g on the occupants brains.

That would be the acceleration imparted to the front of your brain by the back of your forehead as reflected off the inside of the back of your skull. It's the internal shock wave inside your brain that kills you.

Nothing else matters.

That's the point. You want the car to take the crushing forces, not your face.

Note to self: remove dead hookers from trunk before crashing.
