Insuring your FI and upgrades

So for those that are into the FI and have done major work, you know that we are all around 15-20k into it. How are you insuring your car properly? My agent said non of that is covered and i need to get a car appraisal and have specialty insurance.

What are you all doing to make sure your parts and car are covered correctly. MODS...Sorry if this is the wrong section. Feel free to move to what makes sense.

I thought there was a section in the policy for aftermarket parts that you have to pay extra for. You have to provide receipts, etc. to prove the cost of the parts/kits.

I asked this to Geico and they said they cover absolutely no aftermarket modifications to the car. :(

when i signed up for progressive there was an option to insure additional value custom work or aftermarket stuff. of course i didn't do it, because i'm an idiot.

I've never tried it, but I think AAA and Wawanesa do? When I bent a Volk RE30 on the S2000 when I ran over a curb, I got that replaced through insurance when the car got repaired. :)

I have Wawanesa. They cover the first $5000 in modifications and aftermarket parts (this is to cover the "typical" wheels and stereo mods). Anything beyond that, you have to send in receipts, and they'll bill you for it. They have a maximum of $20,000 in additional aftermarket coverage. I pay about $6/year for every $1000 in coverage.

YMMV.

I think some insurance companies do, some dont, thats why im asking. I have allstate. They dont apparently. When i first spoke to them, they just said keep your receipts and its all covered. this didnt sit right with me so i spoke to my agent and specifically said i have around 20k in upgrades on my car, is that covered. She laughed and said no. And they dont offer any kind of extra insurance...sid i need to go elsewhere if i want it covered.

Anyone know about USAA and if they'll cover aftermarket mods on a rider?

phloozy 01-31-2014 02:03 PM

You should be able to call up and add that at any time, no?

Ameriprise covers aftermarket and customizations as seperate riders on your policy. Receipts for proof at time of adding coverage of corse. Same as others that do you pay a few extra dollars a month for the piece of mind.

USAA covers only 5k :(. Cant get anymore unless you go through big USAA billed through another company like how they do with motorcycle insurance(Use Progressive) but I am doing some follow up and getting more info from them.

Well the USAA company will NOT cover the vehicle if it is you DD. (American something or other) They will however do it if the twin is your show car. 5K is the limit through USAA :(.
