Short ram or cold air intake?
 

Hello guys, I don't know a lot about engines to be honest, so with that said, I need help on deciding what intake to get short or cold what's the difference?

Neither. Wait for grimmspeed to release their intake and get that since the majority of the intakes sold right now are Crap.

I personally would not buy any of the currently available intakes. They either require aftermarket tuning to make power or just plain suck.

Cold air is always better, but depending on the car, it may not be possible. Grimmspeed will probably have an awesome intake after their testing results.

Not much difference other can sound.
If I didn't already have an intake, id wait for full blown ;)

Some will argue a cold air is better. And that a short ram only ingests hot air from the engine bay. This may be true on some platforms, but is much less likely on the 86. Most intakes I've seen use the factory location to good effect, cold air or short ram. I believe CSG Mike did some thermal tests with the Jackson Racing supercharger kit's short ram intake and it was ingesting ambient air temps so long as the car was moving.

The only risk to a short ram is heat soaking while stopped, which isn't a problem because the engine is under no load and the moment you move, cool air comes in. The paranoid will an a shroud, which in and of itself isn't a bad idea, just not completely necessary.

The problem I see with a cold air is if the filter is in a fender or exposed in the bumper is troublesome maintenance and/or possible water ingestion.

Just get a drop in filter. The stock air intake setup is already cold air induction, and it is very well designed from the factory from everything I've seen. It will probably support any horsepower increases you would conceivably see from bolt on parts. The only reason I see to go aftermarket is sound.

The BEST combo out there is the TRD cold air intake with any aftermarket snorkel air duct scoop, the only down side is both together are $500 plus.

Has ANYONE actually tested any of these aftermarket snorkels and made more power? Or is it a case of "it looks cooler so it must be better"? The one member who actually dynoed his car(with a Zeek duct) gained 4HP at the very top end while losing 15 lbs./ft. of torque throughout much of the RPM range. I would have to see some actual results before I would spend the money. But, hey, it's your money, not mine. Grimmspeed has tested the stock snorkel and it seems to be a very well designed part.
