Staggered tires and STS Tire & Battery

Funny story I had to share with fellow FT86ers..

I went to STS Tire and Battery to see if they would price match or beat Tire Rack for ordering tires.

Me: "I want a quote on some tires, Hankook V12 255/35/18 rear and 225/40/18 front"

STS: "What kind of car?"

Me: "13 Subaru BRZ...."

STS: "Your car isn't showing a staggered setup."

Me: "I know.. I have aftermarket rims it will be fine"

STS: "We won't be able to put staggered tires on your car, it doesn't come like that"

Me: "I know, hence why I bought new rims. They are wider in the rear to accommodate it.."

STS: "I don't think that will work, your car can only fit 215 tires."

:sigh:

I left.

I don't know if the guy was new or what.. but wow.

How can you be so clueless working the desk at a tire shop...

Then again, I feel like I know more than 90% of the people I deal with when I enter an auto shop/dealership.

But the people that know their stuff, really make me love being an enthusiast. I'm lookin at you guy that sold me the Subaru crash bolts that said you were on these forums.

I could totally see that being the reason, but I think this guy was just an idiot.

I remember it took me a little bit to find a shop that would mount my 315/70/17 tires on my 7.5" rims for my Jeep.. but I did. And they worked great on and off road at all PSI's for about 10k miles.

I bought Pirelli P-Zero Rosso's (my favorite perfromance tire) from Tire Rack. (The recommended Pirelli is the Nero, as it comes in the stock size, but I have owned both and the Rosso is superior on a ligher car especially.)

The initial response from Tire Rack was that these did not come in stock size. But they came in one size larger at 225, yet had the same profile available at 45. I bought them and the fit was just fine and these tires give a lot more grip when you turn off all the traction controls, especially in winter weather with cold pavement and even when the Pirellis are warmed up they give more grip but still allow for rear sliding in the right situation. In the end my gut feeling was correct from my experience in sports cars over the years, and Tire Rack did not try to fight me on the choice once I made it.

guys, you've gotta remember that people that buy a car and go from a square to a staggered setup probably account for <1% of all transactions made at a tire store.

modding cars is the minority. Sure, it's a tire shop. But I can walk in a computer shop and make the guy at the counter look like a complete idiot.

Also, the tire shop employee might be trying to cover his ass in case someone comes back with the reason "you sold me tires that do not fit my car" or "your tires caused my car to crash"
