DIY - Hella Horns
16 gauge wire (Red and Black)
3 1/4in female disconnects (crimp connectors) -- home depot ~$2 for set of 15 1 1/4in male disconnect 1 1/4in ring terminal 4 1/4in bolt 1/2 inch long 4 1/4in nuts (use 7/16 socket or wrench) 2 1/4in lock washer (optional) Angled Aluminum or 90 degree brackets Black tube for chasing wires Soldering Iron Hella Horns (Supertone and Panther horns work for this) Remove bumper, grillcraft.com has a great how too: http://www.grillcraft.com/installs/i...install_id=309 Make the bracket (optional) You can either make your own angle bracket or buy some. I made mine since I had some angled aluminum laying around. You don't need to paint these since they are hidden: Cut 2 3/4 - 1 inch sections: http://i.imgur.com/yx4O3Fll.jpg Make a brace to hold the brackets out of a 2x4: http://i.imgur.com/vSBiwvTl.jpg Make one solid cut half way through the 2x4 then shave the inner edge until the angled aluminum is snug. Drill hole with 1/4in bit don't press too hard, let the bit do the work. Sand off the rough edges: http://i.imgur.com/aRbFcP7l.jpg Make wiring There are 2 horns marked L and H and each one has a different connector. For the L horn you need to make one long red (~2.5ft) wire with a male disconnect at one end and a female disconnect at the other and a short (~6imn) black wire with a ring terminal at one end and female disconnect at the other. For the H horn you make 2 medium (~1ft) length wires both with female disconnects at one end and posts at the other. To make the posts use a soldering iron to coat the tip of the wire with solder: http://i.imgur.com/Uihujhvl.jpg And trim to size: http://i.imgur.com/mh8vVsel.jpg You don't want the posts to be too wide or thick as they need to fit in the H horns connector. The solder is really just there to stiffen the wire. You should have wires that look like this: http://i.imgur.com/JlWzCssl.jpg Install the wires in the wiring harness. The medium wires posts go in the H harness (order doesn't matter): http://i.imgur.com/gfMVNb9l.jpg And the male connector on the long red wire goes in the L connector (sorry no pic). Intall tubing and wrap with black electrical tape. Make sure the wires reach to the mounting points as annotated in the below image: http://i.imgur.com/W5X2uvDl.jpg Underneath there are elongated holes that will be used to mount the brackets. Pick whether you want to use the inner or outer holes. I initially used the inner ones but my license plate covered them up, so I remounted then on the outer holes. Use a ridged pole or a telescoping magnetic thingy to place the bolts head up thread down through the hole. The outer ones are easier to work with: http://i.imgur.com/z0dpGKGl.jpg A locking washer can make tightening easier. Next add bracket and use nut to tighten-- leave loose enough to adjust the angle. For the drivers side (or wherever you will place the L horn) use additionally add the ring terminal: http://i.imgur.com/iytuqRMl.jpg Attach the horn (it may be easier to remove the horn from its straight bracket): http://i.imgur.com/QYr5HKCl.jpg Tighten the nuts (use some thread locker). If you use the inner mounts it harder to tighten or remove since you have no access to the top of the bolt. Attach the female connectors to horns, order doesn't matter as long as you connect the L wires to the L horn and H wires to the H horn. Check to makes sure the horns are working before you reinstall the bumper! Reinstall bumper. Done: http://i.imgur.com/EE5QlVpl.jpg |
Thanks for the DIY, I never got around to finishing mine, but here is an optional mounting location for them. They are hidden behind the bumper but the sound is the exact same, I just didn't want to block air flow to my intercooler.

Your IC is beefier than mine. But you may be able to make a bracket such that it's off to the side. The 2 elongated holes on either side of your pic are right above the holes I used to mount the brackets. Is the low horn one pointing towards the driver?
And nice build thread! |

Your thread looks good to man. |

Is there an easier way to do this for noobs who don't work with much electrical stuff?

A relay is suggested though per the hella instructions. |

Thanks for they DIY. Made similar brackets but bigger with 2 screws for a sure fit. They're a bit off center since I messed up when measuring but that doesn't bother me. Pics attached. Olorin you're the man.

Why these horns? Are they louder? Deeper? Higher pitched?
|
look them up on youtube. Louder for sure.
I also kept the stock horns (we have 2) so I have 4 horns in total right now. Not train horn loud, but loud enough to make people get out of the way (in the City of Chicago people like to cross the street in very unexpected places and very unexpected times). |
I am the only one that thinks these are one of the worst/ uglyiest trends in the subi world. next to rally armor mudflaps, bright plasti dip, and racecar stickers
|
I beg to differ. Love the looks of Hellas. Love the look of rally armor flaps on stis and wrxs, not so much on brz. And I love well executed plastidip. No comment on stickers tho haha
