GT86's Firestorm 86
Greetings everyone :burnrubber:
For those of you who know me, I've been somewhat obsessed with cars my whole life. This obsession has led to me owning a total of 14 cars over the last 10 years. Some good, some horrible, others mediocre. In short, I've ended up just about where I started... My car progression... : 2000 Pontiac Grand AM GT 2003 WRX - STI conversion - 500+whp (pre-kids when I could dump 15k into a car build :D) 1981 Datsun 280zx 2005 VW GLI 2006 Subaru Legacy 2013 FR-S 2014 Evo X MR 2015 VW GTI Mk7 - APR stage 2 2015 BRZ Limited Just like with the FR-S, my goal is to improve the braking and handling of the car, but this time I want to add some additional power. I still hope to instruct HPDEs some day soon (It's a matter of bravery at this point :bonk:). So, I want a car that can not only be a blast on the track but can also provide a great platform for learning and teaching. Sadly these will have to wait till tomorrow.
Went ahead and set up the adjusents according to the Tein specifications. I guess well see how they are once installed. http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/f...psspqld3ua.jpg |
Adjusted a bit further and everything is on spot with Tein's recommended specs.
This should look and more importantly feel great once the 57Xtremes and RE11A's are mounted. Front http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/f...psba8yhmnr.jpg Back http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/f...psiefh8mfx.jpg Won't be messing with camber until alignment and new wheels mounted. http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/f...psmwd20m9q.jpg http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/f...psxatpmf5v.jpg |

After about three hours of tinkering ... Out with the old and in with the new.
http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/f...psmxxaigiy.jpg http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/f...psstqqv9jo.jpg There were some frustrating moments and some tips I'd like to share... When I'm more awake lol. |
Thanks @GrimmSpeed and @DarrenDriven for the excellent write ups.
Between the two of your guides I was covered! Also a big thanks to Jacky at @vividracing for the great sales & support. I had great experiences back in 2003 with them when building my WRX and it looks like they're still doing a great job. The new wheels and tires should look great now! Some notes & tips on my install: If you're limited on jack stands or don't have a flat area to work, lifting just the front works great for removal and install. As noted in the GS DIY, in order to reattach the end links in the front you must have undone both sides. You don't have to remove the ABS cable from it's clip. Both clips will pop out of the strut fairly easily. Just be gentle. Rear is harder than it looks. I had to remove the rear hub bolts as noted in DarrenDriven's guide as the strut wouldn't budge otherwise. It indeed takes a lot of strength to push the LCA down to fit the strut. Using the little scissor jack to reposition the LCA as well as the rear hub helps! |
Too late now but its easier to install the bolts into the lca starting with the hub side and working inward to the subframe mount. You have more leverage to push the inside end up and the bolt through the subframe and lca. I did it without any assistance from a jack on my sti when I installed my cusco lcas on my sti which shares the same rear suspension setup.
|
Yeah, I accidentally figured that out on the 2nd rear install.
I still had to man handle the crap out of the hub to get it in place. Will be great to know when I put on the LCA's eventually. Thanks! |

Cool were going to be twins. Same wheels I got. Its going to look beautiful
|
Yours does look great! Can't wait to get mine on. Will be next weekend probably.
|
Can't wait to see the new shoes! Your car is going to be a completely different animal on track next month. You're gonna love it!
|
Well... It's possible to fit 4 tires and 4 wheels in this car. Not really comfortable, but possible.

Took the car into gran turismo east yesterday. I can't say enough positive things about the guys there. I had a blast talking with the crew and some other customers there while getting the wheels and tires mounted.
They really know their stuff, and will work with you to get the best setup. I ended up with 2.5 negative camber in front and 2.6 negative camber in back. I really need some rear lca's but it'll have to wait. Ride is so different now. Grip for days, and a lot more confidence in the turns. Of course it looks pretty nice too :) |
Preview, I hope to take some proper pictures soon!

Yes, the coils were setup to their suggested measurements and I haven't changed them since. However I'm wondering if I could go +1° camber in the rear if I raise it a bit (.25-.5 ").
|
Thanks!
Is the front lower than rear? |
Measuring from the ground to the fender they're all within 1/8th of an inch or less.
I'll have to double check but I think the rear is the tiniest bit higher. |
Quote:
The front is 13" from center of wheel to fender, and rear is 13.5." Effectively it's a bit over a 1" drop. |
Ordered dark smoke side markers. The orange is just killing me after going with black wheels. Funny how it's more noticeable now. I didn't even care before.

I was on the wait list but just got into the March 13th AMP event. So, I'll have to order the pads and some more fluid here soon! |
Can't wait to see what you do with the next project!
|
Hankook RS3 v2's in 245-40-17 ordered!
Tein Mono Sports ordered! RPF1 17x9 + 35 pending! PMu Club racer pads, fluid, & SPC LCA pending! :D Prepping for March 13th track day. |
Tentative list of track days I'll be attending:
March 13th AMP with Jzilla April 9th AMP with HoD June 3rd Road Atlanta with Jzilla August 20/21st Road Atlanta with Chin Motorsports September 25th AMP with Jzilla October 21st Road Atlanta with Jzilla November 5th AMP with HoD November 26/27th Road Atlanta with Chin Motorsports * I also want to do a Roebling Rd event this year |
I received my gently used TEIN Mono Sport coil overs! I can't wait to feel the difference between these and the old Street Flex.
Unfortunately, Fedex was a bit rough with the packaging and one of eye ring bushings escaped. Thankfully TEIN is sending another and I should get it sometime next week! https://scontent-atl3-1.xx.fbcdn.net...14&oe=572A52FD My free tires came in as well and the RPF1s should be delivered on Monday! https://scontent-atl3-1.xx.fbcdn.net...b9&oe=577151CA I'm ordering the following today, and hope to get it all installed next weekend so I can get aligned the following week. SPC ADJUSTABLE LOWER CONTROL ARMS (REAR) W/ TOE KIT PROJECT MU CLUB RACER BRAKE PADS PROJECT MU G-FOUR 335 BRAKE FLUID This is already turning out to be a much better "bang for the buck" build. The wheels should be much better suited for track duty, and were basically half the cost :D |
Wheels, center caps and lugs came in! I can't wait till Friday :D
https://scontent-atl3-1.xx.fbcdn.net...1f&oe=572BEC2E |
After a late Thursday night wrapping up the rear coilover and LCA installation, I got my tires/wheels mounted and alignment dialed in. I ended up at -3 front and -2.4 rear with zero toe all around.
So far it feels incredible compared to stock as well as my old setup. The rear LCA adjustment and improved dampening of the Tein Mono Sports really have made a big difference. Took almost as long to figure out how to cram all this in! https://scontent-atl3-1.xx.fbcdn.net...9c&oe=575C77CF Fun times at Gran Turismo East. Someone needs to donate a Subaru "Proud of Boxer" flag for them to hand up :D https://scontent-atl3-1.xx.fbcdn.net...12&oe=576C706C I hope the weather clears up soon so I can take some proper pictures. https://scontent-atl3-1.xx.fbcdn.net...06&oe=5755548B I really like the gunmetal on white combination. https://scontent-atl3-1.xx.fbcdn.net...aa&oe=5724F8BE Now... the big question is what mods come next? Well, nothing will be ordered prior to my next 2 track days at Atlanta Motorsports Park. |
I'm nearly set on the following for my next upgrade sometime this summer :burnrubber:
-Velox Hood Louver kit -Moto East Flex Fuel kit/ DBW tune -SBD Turbo Kit -Kate Cool Oil Cooler -Dezod Catback -Radium Dual Catch Can kit Then the next stage would be aero! My car will more or less look like this haha https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1645/...f9e88a2f_b.jpg |
I ordered these in preparation for March 13th. I've heard only good things about these mounts from some of my GTR and EVO buddies.
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41sktE0rg7L.jpg http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...L._SL1500_.jpg The only other thing I'll be getting before the 13th and April 2nd is a new helmet. |
Last weekend I got my track pads on and changed the brake fluid. I have enough for another change between my two half empty bottles! I remembered it being incredibly easy the last time I used the fluid extractor and it was even quicker this time around. I'm surprised more people don't use this method!
https://scontent-atl3-1.xx.fbcdn.net...c3&oe=57558A3C Either today or tomorrow I'll be taking off some weight for Sunday :D |
