Trunk Swap Risks?
I couldn't deiced for the longest time if I wanted the factory spoiler or not. But now that I find out the Monogram must come with the spoiler, it helped me realize I really don't want it. (Funny how that works)
I have a few questions though, first, the VIN numbers. I've heard that if you swap your trunk with someone the VIN numbers won't match which could lead to some kind of insurance issues or the like. Also I'm afraid that the color's wont match up completely since the cars were painted different days, temperatures, humidity ect. And finally, I will have my car Opti-Guarded ASAP after purchase. But the new trunk might not be depending on where I get it. I'm a little picky because I want to have this car for a very long time and the little details drive me nuts so I'm trying to make the most informed decision possible. What do you guy's think? |
It's stuff like this that will bug you for as long as you own the car (sort of like settling for a color you don't really like because that's all they had left...).
Don't do it! |
Don't do it, just deal with the spoiler. No need for headaches, and worries!

Carbon Fiber all the way man.

I've ordered a Monogram as well and hate the factory Scion spoiler. I'm getting the spoiler removed and the holes sealed with rubber stoppers and getting the 5 axis spoiler installed over, which will cover the seals.

I think you should see the FRS Spoiler first if you haven't already. See if you like it or not in person.
If you really really hate it... I would switch it to a spoiler you'll like.... either a TRD or maybe the BRZ one. I wouldn't swap trunks because I would want my original trunk LOL. |
I did do a trunk swap with a BRZ. There is a single VIN Sticker, I could not find it actually stamped in the metal. It was pretty simple to pull the sticker off, I would have moved it over but the sticker broke in the process. There are also services for purchasing a new sticker, so you can make sure it still matches, you just need to show you have the pieces of the old one.
To me it bothered me less to swap for free, then to spend $500 on a spoiler+install. The color matches exactly, and only those who own the twins know it was not OEM equipment. I have documentation of the swap for those who would be concerned about an accident, but 99.999% of people would not even notice this anyway. If you really dislike the look of the OEM trunk, I think it is a good option, and I could not really find any downsides. |

Interesting post... I bought my black frs with the spoiler about 6-8 months ago and I still can't decide if I like... I have considered trading my trunk for wingless one... I'm sure the colors would match fine... But I hear there could be some alignment issues, and now the VIN... Idk I'm still thinking about it... The car looks awful sleek without the spoiler

I was wondering about this also. Since the monogram comes with the smart key package, wouldn't changing the trunks mess with the sensor in there, preventing you from easily opening it?

Don't swap trunks. Buy a TRD spoiler (best looking IMO) and be done with it. It covers all the holes and comes with the little stickers to cover them up. I don't like the Scion spoiler either, it's fugly to me and I'll be getting a TRD spoiler to cover that up. Swapping trunks is just welcoming a bunch of unnecessary headaches.

Pretty sure the 5 axis doesn't cover the holes |
