Question on fog/3rd brake light blinking

Good evening all,

I just have a quick question.

I did ask on couple of facebook pages but I just want to confirm for sure before I go ahead and order the part.

I was looking at Reverse light kit from mod******** and I was kind of tempted to get one.

[ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFIe5_K80C4"]Valenti[/ame]

And I really do like the F1-styled foglight that blinks 3 times when the brake was applied which then eventually goes to solid after 3 blinks.

Now, I live in NJ and I read up all the laws and regulations involved with auto lights and I do not see anything directly against having a blinking brake light.

However, I do see that flashing lights that may imitate or resemble lights used by public and governmental agencies~ is prohibited. But it only flashes 3 times (well.. here it is.. it does flash) but it then goes to solid after 3 blinks. :bonk:

Following statues and codes are the ones that seem to apply to my concern:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NEW JERSEY STATUTES AND CODES

39:4-60.1. Certain rotating or flashing lights prohibited On and after the effective date of this act no rotating or flashing light which imitates or resembles rotating or flashing lights such as are used by public and governmental agencies or any public utility to indicate emergency or hazardous conditions shall be erected or used within 100 feet of the roadway of a highway within the State.

L.1970, c. 134, s. 1, eff. July 9, 1970.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NEW JERSEY STATUTES AND CODES

39:4-92.1. Fire department vehicle returning to fire station; flashing red light

It shall be lawful for any fire department vehicle when returning to its fire station from an emergency call to display a flashing red light visible under normal atmospheric conditions from a distance of at least 500 feet to the rear of the vehicle and no driver of any vehicle other than one on official business shall follow any such vehicle displaying said light closer than 300 feet.

L.1966, c. 289, s. 1, eff. Oct. 6, 1966.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So... did I just answer my own question? :(

I mean, the kit does have the fog light flash 3 times but it does become a solid red light once pressed continuously.

Any experts (possibly a cop?!) can help me out with this?

Thanks in advance!

Some high class Mercedes have flashing 3rd brake light. So I think you will be fine with this.

Chen 01-23-2014 04:02 AM

you'll be fine.

Pretty sure uninstalling the 3rd brake light is illegal though. There is a height requirement for the 3rd brake light, and the rear fog light doesn't meet it.

I meant if I ever get a ticket for installing the Valenti unit I will have to take it out and put the stock one back in..

So are you saying having that Valenti unit is illegal because of the 3rd brake light height requirement does not meet?

Since I have brz premium and I don't even have a fog light.. what if I connect the triangular part to the headlight and have it come on when the headlights come on though?

Hmm..

Hmm..

I'm saying if you remove the factory 3rd brake light and use the fog light (reflector here in US) instead - that is illegal. Hooked up properly, it would come on with your fog lights.. it is supposed to be low and bright to aid in others seeing you in poor weather conditions (similar principle as your fog lights up front).

Maybe I worded it wrong.

When I said 3rd brake light I referred it as the triangular reflector ~_~

I'm not going to remove the 3rd (or is it 2nd?)brake light which is the one by rear window.

I want to replace the reflector + reverse light unit to the Valenti unit and have what is now a reflector (triangular red part on our cars) be always lit on, and have it flash 3 times when I brake which then goes to solid if I'm holding the brake.

Whether or not I have what we have as reflector to be lit up with headlight or DLR, you're saying that's all illegal?

Sorry for confusion, I'm a bit confused :9

No, that isn't illegal. I thought you meant you were unhooking/removing your factory 3rd brake light.

I've had my own kind of twist on the flashing brake light for over a year now in Texas with no problems, definitely one of my favorite mods

It is a special motorcycle brake light that I retro fitted to the triangle reflector in the 4th brake light, I have it wired to the brake light only but I could wire it up so its a solid color when the running lights are on and then it flashes when the brakes are applied, But I liked it kind of hidden, I do have a kill switch on it for any states that have problems with it, as I cross state lines a lot for shows, I also disconnected the third brake light but left it in place in case I need it, I can just plug it back in

Google motorclye brake lights and there's hundred's of different lights to choose from
