Yep, cost me $9000 to pay off the loan and get rid of the car. Shop didn't refund any install money or apologize for the negligence. Same shop installed the premium stage 1 kit from Full Blown on another widebody car out here. It had cooling issues and never really was 100%. Owner of that one is now doing a swap due to the motor blowing.

We (currently) have nine motors that blew: 2 during development 4 Turbos 1 from mechanic negligence 1 from bad tuning 2 unknown 3 Superchargers 1 from a rod defect 1 on a brand new barely-released Sprintex kit 1 from a bad tune Notable Absence Not a single CARB-tuned supercharged car has blown (Innovate, Vortech, nor Jackson) Before jimmies get rustled, I want to make it clear that I am NOT saying that it's impossible to pursue worry-free custom-gains, and I am not saying that turbos are inherently evil or dangerous. It just takes more knowledge and due diligence to pursue custom gains (whether that is through learning yourself, or deciding which shops/tuners to trust). But JoeBob ForumLurker might read this thread and be thinking, "Maybe I should sit out from Forced Induction forever because there seems to be a lot of risk." And I want to say to JoeBob ForumLurker that running a CARB-approved tune on a CARB-approved kit is incredibly safe. The Forced Induction swimming pool is large, and just because engines have blown while exploring the deep end does not mean that the shallow end is dangerous to you. |

Likewise, people bend over backwards to justify the greatness of their own tuner. When someone's magic gives you 50% more power, of course you love them! Consequently even when you hear somebody say so-and-so tuner is great, it seems like there is a 50% chance that the same person will turn around and tell you how their tuner screwed up their tune in the past and could have caused serious damage, but then everything turned out fine so it's all fine and the tuner is great! I'm not pointing fingers, it's just maddening trying to gather the information required to make responsible decisions about this kind of stuff. |
The point of this thread is hearing about the bad side of things. In reading the bad things that have had happen to people ,I believe, you can make a better choice. If all you hear is the good stuff then no one would ever improve on things.
Btw I believe that tuners should be called out in order to help people not make the same bad choice. Thank you all for sharing. |
