So I guess I decided to compile the list today:

@Frs300
  • Full Blown Turbo Kit
  • 93 Octane Full Blown Basemap
  • Blew the motor in less than 100 miles, due to the vacuum lines being placed incorrectly on the wastegate and overboosting

@nelsmar
  • Vortech Supercharger Kit
  • E85 FA20Club Dyno Tune
  • Blew the motor after 12,000 miles due to tune running too lean

@alexisfire02
  • Larger Sprintex Supercharger
  • FA20Club Dyno Tune
  • Blew the motor on the drive home from getting it tuned

@Innovate Motorsports
  • Innovate Motorsports Supercharger Kit
  • 91 Octane Visconti Tune
  • Blew a motor while attempting to develop the OTS tune to sell with the kit (kits now ship with Delicious Tuning Tune)

@Jesse@JDLAutodesign
  • JDL Turbo Kit
  • JDL Tune on AEM EMS only utilizing the port injectors
  • Blew the motor up do to melted wastegate line and an overboost

@civicdrivr
  • Vortech Supercharger Kit
  • 93 Octane Visconti Tune
  • Blew up the motor while on the dyno

@shiro
  • Greddy Turbo Kit
  • Full Blown Tune
  • Blew the motor in less than 600 miles believe to be caused by the cam timing and prior damage to motor

@cf6mech
  • Accelerated Performance Turbo Kit
  • E85 AWDTuning, Texas Tune
  • Blew the motor when it crushed a rod bearing most likely due to the tuning

@Unleashed
  • Full Blown Turbo Kit
  • 93 Octane Full Blown Basemap
  • Blew the motor because local mechanic installed a 15 PSI spring and ran a 7 PSI basemap and over boosted spinning a bearing

@Michaeljp92
  • P&L Turbo Kit
  • E85 JRTuned Tune
  • Blew the motor because the car was purposely pushed beyond the limits at the drag strip to find out what the actual limits are, the tune was fantastic, the power was just a bit up there for the factory rods to handle.

If anyone knows of any others, please post them up.

Ouch

Realistically from everyone's experience, how long should we expect the motor to last if we boost the car? I'm thinking about daily driving and driving the car gingerly for years. Is it possible to do 200k?

This can't be answered as of yet. Only time will tell. There are several past the 25k boosted mark maybe higher on some turbo kits. I know AVO has a lot of kits in the high boosted milage.

Personally, if I'm boosted from mile 1, I would be pulling the engine to check internals every 20k miles or so, assuming all goes well during those 20k miles. This early in the game, I wouldn't be surprised if some of these boosted peeps have a spare engine on hand, or the cash for it.

Thx, I meant from previous experience with other cars as well, I've never boosted a motor or had a boosted car so I don't know what to expect, though on craigslist I see a lot of wrx or wrx sti's with rebuilt motors at 100k-120k

If you plan to drive the car gingerly for years, then I think you bought the wrong car and why would you consider forced induction. I am confident the motor can do more than 100k miles at the 300 whp and 250 ft-lb power level.

That is cause there are a lot of idiots modiying their WRXs and STIs and doing it poorly with poor tunes and then you have the people that choose to push the limits of the OEM pistons. The limits on the WRXs and STIs are well known as they have been out since 2002 and 2004 using essentially the same motor. The FA20 has had its fair share of idiots as well, and the limits are being defined currently.

I meant gingerly to keep the motor for as long as I can keep it. It's my grocery getter and plan to be my track car.

There may be a lot of idiots out there but you rarely find a stock motor with a stock turbo and tranny at 160k with just maintenance and reliability upgrades

cdrazic93 04-14-2014 08:01 PM

that's just it, never ever buy a pre modded car. You don't know if anything is going to pop the next 5 feet, or 50,000 miles. The terms, "modded with taste" or "done correctly" or "why do it twice when you can do it right the first time" all come to mind. There is a reason why I am still waiting to boost my motor, because I'm in the same boat, I want to figure out what will last to and past 100-200k

nelsmar 04-14-2014 08:18 PM

You have to also realize that a large number of people who are quick to boost are also quick to up the boost. These people also tend to keep upping the boost and breaking things. I am confident I could blow up an NA built FA20 on an aggressive tune within 50k miles beating the living fuck out if it just as much as I am confident that a very conservative lower powered boosted FA20 could live well past 50k miles. Considering how bad my car was tuned and how I had driven it... I am beyond surprised that the engine held.

On the WRX part they are so easy to mod, so many parts available, so many tuners, so much to do, its hard to ever find a WRX with high mileage that has never been modified. This doesn't mean the motor isn't reliable it just means they are commonly modified. Find me a virgin CRX with high mileage. They exist but are quite rare, and this doesn't mean they aren't reliable. And most people know the honda D series is reputably an extremely reliable engine. Time will tell with this engine as well, give it a few years

Also being one of the people to jump to boost quickly I made sure I had enough money to buy at least a short block before boosting my car. I however decided I wanted to build my engine rather than installing a stock one while it was down. This isn't my first or last boosted car that has a non-boosted engine from the factory.

Where are you looking for them? On Internet message boards where almost everyone modifies their car? The people with 160k on a perfectly running motor, turbo, and tranny probably aren't on NASIOC.
