1.8l turbo FRS/BRZ
 

What is the likelihood of Toyota/Subaru developing a reliable 1.8l turbo flat-four with 86mm piston stroke capable of making 230hp@6500+/- rpm, and 210lbft@2500+/- rpm?? I have an A4 1.8t which has loads of torque due to a turbo upgrade and ECU flash. The amount of torque(approx. 250lbft@2000rpm) makes A4 fun to drive and requires less downshifting while driving, but the car is heavy and handling isn’t the most confident inspiring. Even with the upgrades my car stills return its EPA highway MPG of 25mpg/hwy. I love Toyota/Subaru reliability and quality. I wish they would make the FRS/BRZ with a slightly smaller displacement turbo flat-four to keep fuel consumption down and slight increase power. I’ve read that FRS/BRZ are to receive an increase in power via natural aspiration, but I don’t think that most everyday FRS/BRZ drivers would prefer a peaky N/A 4 cylinder. Does anyone know of any likely/potential power options to increase torque and drivability in the works from Subaru/Toyota?

My fiance drives a Dodge Dart 1.8L turbo and I drive it some. It has a lot of torque for a small engine. Ends up averaging 29 mpg too combined in traffic and city driving. Fun little car, zips around town.

I see it as a viable option, but for the FR-S, if anything, they are going to increase displacement or keep it 2.0L with a turbo. This is an enthusiast sports car.

The FRS/BRZ wasn't designed to be easy to drive fast, it was designed as a drivers car that you have to work to get the most out of it. I highly doubt you'll see them ditch the current engine for a smaller displacement turbo engine. They'll keep this one, and then add another option for more power with either more displacement N/A or a turbo 2.0L.

If you want a sporty 2 door car with gobs of turbo torque go visit a Hyundai dealership. :D

or get a 2.0L turbo now on a car that costs much less than a A4

Subaru has a 1.6L and 2L direct-injection turbo engine already, but no 1.8L. The 1.6L doesn't make enough power. The 2L engine in the Forester would probably be fine for the BRZ, it makes 250HP/258ft-lb. It's a very torquey motor though making full torque at 2500rpm and would completely change the dynamics of driving the car.

Engines cost a lot to develop. This car's price point doesn't allow for an optional engine that is completely reengineered. The cost associated would make it highly unlikely.

I agree with other posters, it is not likely a 1.8L will be offered in the BRZ mainly from the standpoint that engine does not exist in the Subaru lineup already and I don't think they would develop an entirely new block for just this model.


Instead, they would most likely use a 2.0L turbo block already offered in other Subaru models, but possibly slightly tweaked for the BRZ (different headers/exhaust/turbo and tune to move power to the right in the powerband). I don't find that to be likely either though to be honest. If you are Subaru and this car is already designed with the 2.0L NA engine, it's easiest/cheapest for them if they want more power to simply rev the current 2.0L engine higher with a different tune and possibly a head upgrade. If they simply revved to 8500 with supporting head work this engine could already make 240-250 hp, just mainly at the top of the power band. If they did that, I think most consumers would be pretty ecstatic with more revs/power yet still with fantastic gas mileage for normal driving. That said, I wouldn't be surprised if that doesn't materialize (if at all!) until the 2016 MY or so. That would have given them three model years of mostly the same design with some major upgrades after three years.

Not going to happen. They already have their master plan in place (next gen body changes, engine, etc) and being a betting guy I will put money down on a turbo 2l or a na 2.5 or something along those lines if they got off their ass and made a TRUE STI version for the USDM.

Its simply because these are already in the subaru stable where the motor comes from to begin with and would minimal r/d costs to make changes like throwing a turbo on the current frs/brz 2.0 Short of that its a crap shoot on what happens if Toyota goes their way with some variant of the FT1 etc. Or if Subi would even keep the BRZ around if there is a split.

Welcome to FT86 fantasy land where everyone makes up fanatical beliefs the N/a Engine will change even after the release of the STi in japan. Maybe after it's 4 year re-up you might see a small turbo engine. But it will be along the same power and more expensive prob. But thats only assumption. Doubt it will happen.

Looking at the history of cars in general, they rarely get completely new engines except when they are late in their life cycle. Honda updated the S2000's engine and it wasn't much better. Nissan updates the 350z's engine too, but that engine was almost used in their whole medium sized cars and CUV lineup.

I'll be pleasantly suprised if they change the engine. The 86 is a global car, same engine sold in dozens of countries - it takes a lot of money to do an engine change over. I myself is plenty satisfied with the power, but I'm stuck in the 90's...
