Question on break-in period
Got a call from the dealer and it looks like my car might be delivered early next week :happyanim: :happyanim: :happyanim:
However, was planning to drive down from JHB to Durban next weekend too (in my Lexus IS), but if I have the GT86, might be tempted to take that instead... So my question is, would it be a good idea to do a 1200KM round trip to Durban on an almost newish car. I know most break-in periods suggest avoid constant throttle positions for the first 1000KM or so. Hence, if I do take the car, would end up with travelling at fairly constant speeds, even if I don't use cruise control. Am I being paranoid or should I just go for it (assuming I get the car before I go)? Also, are there any "Toyota SA" specific oil changes or is 15K the first oil change on these cars? |

I drove my car from the dealership in Joburg to cape town... 1450 Kms some mechanic from subaru told me that's ideal (it is a subaru engine after all) and not worry too much about the throttle, cause real driving is never that constant anyway. then again i've heard of people who drove their car like a maniac from day 1 and claim no noticeable detrimental effect. edit: also, from a mental health perspective it's best to get that break-in period out of the way as soon as possible otherwise you won't be able to enjoy your car as much :) |

Don't stress, just drive it. :burnrubber: There is a massive debate on the 1st OCI. Some say drain after break-in, other say half way at 7500km and other say run the full 15k interval. The 1st two theories are based on assumption while the 3rd has been proven via an Used Oil Analysis test to be 100% ok in our cars regarding the factory fill. My old Honda Civic Type R manual explicitly stated that the factory fill should not be prematurely changed due to the fact that it has additional additives to assist the break in period. Honda uses the same company Idimetsu oil as Subaru does for their factory fills. |
I believe in a proper break-in. I take it easy for a few thousand kms, and I'm especially gentle on a cold engine (actually, I'm always very gentle on a cold engine, not just during break-in). And you can bargain on the oil taking twice as long to warm up as the coolant does.
Once broken in, I have no qualms about giving it horns. The last engine failure I had was in 1971 (which was a dropped valve caused by a missed gearchange), so I'm confident about my methods. I got my dealer to change my oil at about 7500kms (at my cost) because I was uncomfortable with the factory grade 0W15 in Nelspruit's heat. Toyota SA uses 5W20 which is better suited to our conditions IMO. Now that my car's supercharged, I'll be changing my engine oil every 7500kms. Enjoy your new car, and be safe!! :D |

TSA dealerships throughout SA are all currently using Toyota Labelled 5w30 which is a rebranded Total Ineo MC3 5w30 on change which I agree is the right choice of our climate, although, I believe no harm will come using a 0w20 in normal driving conditions if you are not doing circuit racing or running forced induction. |

OH, and to be on topic, I do 80% highway driving, and I "varied my speed" during break in by travelling anywhere between 90 km/h and 120 km/h (limit is 110 km/h) and changing every few minutes.
