You country folk have my sympathies
 

I took the back roads home the other day, just kind of exploring. Numerous roads came out at a 45 degree angle. Pulling out onto the next road was scary as hell, due to the seriously limited vision through the rear quarters. No matter what I did, I never had complete confidence when starting out.
Anyone else have issues with this?

Come in all crossed up, make sure nobody is crossing with horses up ahead, glance in the rear-view for tractors or the law, hammer down.

Or so I've heard.

hmmm.......I don't understand ..... if the road you're on, is intersecting another road at a 45 degree angle, why would you need to see out the back quarter of your car for oncoming traffic...unless your backing out into the road ..... :iono:

Perhaps more details are needed. Picture yourself turning left onto a two lane road. The road you are on bears left at its end so you have to look over your right shoulder to see traffic coming from the right on the road you are turning onto. Because of the angle, you have to look through the right rear pillar of the car. You just don't see much of that except for in the countryside. At least not around here.

I knew what u meant from post 1. We have roads like that in Corbett Oregon headed up the mountain. Honestly I just learned to adjust my angle coming up to the road so I can see out my passenger window instead.

Sounds like you would be better off pulling up to said stop sign at a perpendicular angle to the road you're turning onto and not necessarily at the 45 degree angle the road you were on was pointing. Easier said than done as I don't know what the road looks like exactly, but we have a few roads like that around here.

OK, I think I see where you're are coming from .... or trying to see from.

When I back out of my driveway, I have to be at a 45 degree angle to the street (because of an apex in the drive & low car) and the rear end is pointing up (because it's uphill) ..... thus making it hard to see over the rear quarter of the car.

So, I just pause a moment .... then gun it and do a quick throttle blip/shift/clutch manuver (like in the old days with going from reverse to first to lay rubber) to be ready to peel out, unleashing the whole 151 ft lbs of torque and 200 screaming HP all over the street ..... to escape the fool who doesn't stop, when he/she sees an old man backing out of his driveway......:mad0260:

I think the term you gentlemen are looking for is.... J-Turn.

Use other senses...watch for movement in the trees as you approach that angled intersection and listen for the noise of crossing traffic. When you live in the "country" you learn to maneuver those intersections better. Sometimes it just means you arc the car to the left of the right as you pull to the line to give more visibility.

My only issues with back roads are large game and rocks.
