Know your roots: AE86!
For all the newcomers out there, surely you've read that the Toyota 86/Scion FR-S is the spiritual successor to the AE86 Toyota from the 1980's, also known as Sprinter Trueno, Levin, Corolla GT-S, or by it's nickname "hachi-roku" (meaning "eight-six" in Japanese). Here's a little video that I think best demonstrates the potential of that little car, why we as enthusiasts love it so much, and why we have so greatly anticipated it's modern return! After seeing this, you should hopefully understand, too.
I'm certain you'd have to be living under a rock to not know something about this cult classic, but I think we should have a place to show off just how great this little car was and still is today. Feel free to post pics and videos of the best AE86's out there so the newcomers can know where we're coming from, and why we're so passionate about the AE86's reincarnation! This video is of Keiichi Tsuchiya, the famed "Drift King" who could also be regarded as the grandfather of drifting and the AE86. This is his personal hachi-roku, gifted to him by Toyota/TRD and modified for excellent performance: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7iDk3TEPgCA"]KT AE86 drift show - YouTube[/ame] http://webspace.webring.com/people/n.../driftking.jpg And here is a picture of an AE86 N2 racecar, a popular race series in the 1980's: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4037/...d292c0c025.jpg And of course the famed Fujiwara Tofu Shop delivery car, driven by Takumi Fujiwara in the popular "Initial D" manga and anime, written by Shuichi Shigeno: http://id.initial.d.tripod.com/AE86_1.jpg |
good stuff. any chance of making an 86 sound like that ae86?

Cant forget UEO!

For those new the AE86, it should be said that in stock form it was NOT an easy car to drift. It didn't slide around the corner on the way off the lot or make every driver into a Drift King.
Instead, it was a light responsive platform that rewarded skill, and flipped the bird at idiots. |

Where's Moto-san?!?!?!?! I'm pretty sure he can add about 10 pages to this thread. ;)

Ever asked yourself "Who does the American dub for those fantastic Best Motoring videos?"
Now you know. |

"I drift not because its a quicker way around a corner, but the most exciting way."
-Tsuchiya Keiichi He was also the character inspiration for 'Fujiwara Takumi' in the popular japanese mange and anime 'Initial D' - below is a most fitting clip from the anime, AE86 v Impreza (warning, strange Japanese culture and eurobeat musics ahead.) [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3fqEvxLerA"]Initial D: AE86 vs. Impreza - YouTube[/ame] (bonus for all you subaru enthusiasts-- the GC8 model shown in the clip is representative of the ver5 STI coupe variant of the Subaru Impreza and boasts one of the longest full names of any Subaru model I know of: "Subaru Impreza WRX STI Coupe Type R Version V") |
I've wasted so many hours watching that show. hahaha..

Man I miss the crap out of my old AE86. I keep toying with the idea of getting another, but they are a money pit at this point. Everyone wants 5k for an SR5.

And back on topic yes, I do see what they have in common: small, light, fun, rear-wheel-drive and affordable. Just like the original! |
My old 1987 AE86 coupe with a Trueno Kouki bumper and Zenki lip.
Bought it for $4500, cleaned it up and sold it for $6500. Should have kept it. http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._1712263_n.jpg http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._2393378_n.jpg |
I don't give a sh*t about drifting, for me this car means winning races and rallies. In here where i live, AE86 is very popular rally car. It has won basically everything. Sad part is that every AE86 is modified to rally, so you can't find good one anymore..
|
Oh to be in Finland, where they care about real racing, not drifting and NASCAR... Maybe someday. :)
Here's some cool rally AE86's for everyone to drool over: http://file044.bebo.com/4/large/2008...611065013l.jpg http://straightaftercrest.com/upload...olla%20002.JPG http://85.234.145.37/Remote098763243...03DSCF1274.jpg http://www.tuningfever.fr/pics-max-9...-rally-car.jpg http://www.tuningfever.fr/pics-max-1...y-car-1986.jpg http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2531/4...0a82404e_z.jpg |
Turbowned:
You should watch this video: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7999vgGfpOw"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7999vgGfpOw[/ame] There should be at least few AE86 and lot's of old starlets (wicked machines) and escorts. All of those are crazy, small displacement NA beasts  |
Holy crap, any of those people end up dying?

I bought my sr5 for 500 bucks though and yea the prices on these are retarded http://dallas.craigslist.org/ftw/cto/2989940722.html |

That car will be a hassle in CA due to needing to get it smogged. CA has stupid rules about smogging cars. That car would fail hardcore. They also have SUPER strict motor swap rules. The motor has to come from a newer model car that's sold in CA, and include all factory smogging equipment. They impound 240's that are running anything other than KAs. I was gonna drop an SR or RB until I did some research on it. :( To me, it's not worth the hassle since I don't have a house with a garage nor a trailer to cart the thing around. I'd rather just get the FRS and be able to drive it wherever, and whenever I want. Otherwise I'd be all over that car. I miss my AE86. Right before I moved to CA I had picked up this: http://www.silkroad-usa.com/pages/ae86parts/header.htm I was gonna couple that with a DD exhaust. I wish I could have finished that car. :( |
Oh right, I forgot you're in the People's Republic of California. Even the People's Republic of Massachusetts excuses any cars older than 1996 from getting smogged; that's just rough, man.
