Know your roots: AE86!

For all the newcomers out there, surely you've read that the Toyota 86/Scion FR-S is the spiritual successor to the AE86 Toyota from the 1980's, also known as Sprinter Trueno, Levin, Corolla GT-S, or by it's nickname "hachi-roku" (meaning "eight-six" in Japanese). Here's a little video that I think best demonstrates the potential of that little car, why we as enthusiasts love it so much, and why we have so greatly anticipated it's modern return! After seeing this, you should hopefully understand, too.

I'm certain you'd have to be living under a rock to not know something about this cult classic, but I think we should have a place to show off just how great this little car was and still is today. Feel free to post pics and videos of the best AE86's out there so the newcomers can know where we're coming from, and why we're so passionate about the AE86's reincarnation!

This video is of Keiichi Tsuchiya, the famed "Drift King" who could also be regarded as the grandfather of drifting and the AE86. This is his personal hachi-roku, gifted to him by Toyota/TRD and modified for excellent performance:

And here is a picture of an AE86 N2 racecar, a popular race series in the 1980's:

And of course the famed Fujiwara Tofu Shop delivery car, driven by Takumi Fujiwara in the popular "Initial D" manga and anime, written by Shuichi Shigeno:

For those new the AE86, it should be said that in stock form it was NOT an easy car to drift. It didn't slide around the corner on the way off the lot or make every driver into a Drift King.

Instead, it was a light responsive platform that rewarded skill, and flipped the bird at idiots.

I dont know the specs on the first one posted, but it sounds like its got ITBs, which is where most of that glorious sound is coming from.

It is powered by a 4AGE 20v from an AE111 Toyota Levin. Factory specs are 5 valves per cylinder, 1.6L twin cam with variable valve timing and 11:1 compression ratio, and individual throttle bodies (ITB's), making 165ps and 121lb/ft. Tsuchiya-san's car has been tuned to around the 200ps mark with lots of TRD goodies. The specs are out there online but they're all in Japanese. I have this same engine swapped into my MR2, and it does sound amazing!

For any and all information you could ever want on the AE86 and all it's old-school Toyota cousins, head over to www.club4ag.com and get yourself registered! It's a great community and you can learn a lot!

"I drift not because its a quicker way around a corner, but the most exciting way."
-Tsuchiya Keiichi

He was also the character inspiration for 'Fujiwara Takumi' in the popular japanese mange and anime 'Initial D' - below is a most fitting clip from the anime, AE86 v Impreza (warning, strange Japanese culture and eurobeat musics ahead.)

(bonus for all you subaru enthusiasts-- the GC8 model shown in the clip is representative of the ver5 STI coupe variant of the Subaru Impreza and boasts one of the longest full names of any Subaru model I know of: "Subaru Impreza WRX STI Coupe Type R Version V")
