Throw out bearing/Left Front speaker/Paint Chips
I bought mine with 21 miles on black friday and it has had three problems since day one:
1.) When its cold, it has a knocking/hurling/whirling noise coming from underneath the car. It doesn't matter what side you get under, you can pin point it to the center (underneath). It sounds like its coming from the transmission. Idling in neutral, you hear the knocking/hurling/whirling. If you push in the clutch pedal, noise disappears. I think its either the Throw Out bearing or something in the transmission. 2.) At all volumes, you can hear what sounds like some distortion coming from the Left Front Speaker. Its more prevalent if the volume is really low to where you cant almost hear it (like vol 4) but something is rattling from the Left Front Dash. 3.) Maryland passed a law stating that if your car doesn't have a licence plate mounting bracket, you don't need to display the front tag. So naturally, I took mine off, only to find that the dealer had drilled 2 holes into the plastic grill. that part doesn't bother me as much as the top screws went in to far into the painted part of the bumper causing the paint to crack in 2 places. Car currently has 880 miles on it. Taking it in on Monday to get it looked at and to have its first oil change. Wish me luck and if anyone has any similar issues, feel free to share! |

I also have had the noisy tranmission since almost new. most noticably during warm up, going through a drive through or something with a wall to funnel the noise... theres a couple threads on here about it.. i hope its normal. I actually read about a couple peoples throw out bearings going so ive been concious of keeping my foot on the clutch when not needed since pretty much new.

Its very noticeable upon start up on a cold morning. Ill be dropping the car off in a few hours for tomorrow so I will keep everyone posted to see what the dealer says.
I have a feeling their going to tell me that's the noise it suppose to make and I will freak out!! Just like all the 350z's that have the flywheel chatter. My buddy told me that Nissan dealer told him that's just the way the car is. Not acceptable! |

This is the letter I attached in my night drop box slip:
I bought my 2014 FRS with 21 miles on it on black Friday. Since the day I got it, I have had three problems with the car that have not got any better: 1.) The biggest concern of mine is when you first start the car in cold weather. As soon as you start it, with the car idling in neutral, you can hear noise coming from underneath the car. It doesn’t matter where you get down on the ground to listen to the noise, it all pinpoints to the same area. It’s a knocking/rattle noise coming from the transmission. The noise seems to disappear when you push the clutch in. I don’t know if that’s the throw out bearing or something inside the trans but it’s a problem that doesn’t seem to be going away. 2.) When listening to the sound system, there is a rattle/buzzing noise coming from the left front speaker on the dash. I’ve never adjusted the volume higher than 42 before so if a speaker is blown or causing distortion, I have no idea why, but it is very annoying. 3.) I have two paint chips in the front bumper from the installation of the license plate. The two top silver metal screws that were used to secure the license plate to the license plate bracket are too long, causing the ends of the screws to go into the paint on the bumper. I don’t know if painting the bumper is an option or replacing the bumper is, but the paint is cracked in 2 places. Also, the two lower black self-tapping screws were used to mount the license plate bracket into the black plastic grill, now exposing two large holes in my grill. I would like the grill replaced too, without holes drilled into it as I will not be displaying the front license plate. 4.) I would like my first oil change please. *to hear the speaker rattle clearly, play the song “Rattle.” Its located on my Ipod, under the “Toyota Speaker Testing” Playlist. Now for their reply: 1.) They did hear the noise and stayed that I was the first customer to come to them with this noise/complaint. They did confirm that it was coming from what sounded like the transmission. They also had 3 FR-S's on the lot that they compared the noise to. ALL 3 brand new FR-S's made the noise (according to the dealer). They stated that this is how the car just sounds. If there is to be a Recall made, they will inform me. At this time, they did not feel comfortable enough to remove my trans for further inspection. I asked if I could listen to the other FR-S's they had on the lot and confirm that they are making the same noise, but when I came to pick up my car they told me I would have to come back when the manager was there to go start up 3 different cars ( I got there 10 mins before they closed at 6:50). 2.) They were aware of the noise/rattle coming from the speakers. They have had several complaints about this and they were told that there is a Recall/Campaign that is in the process of being made for this. They also thought that some of the rattle was coming from the master switch on the door (for the windows/power locks). These cars may exhibit problems from that, but I don't not think that's where my noise is coming from. They will keep me posted when the "fix" is out. 3.) The paint chips. The manager (Bob) personally called me and discussed these 3 issues I had with me. He said that he did see the cracks and he would call them more "Impressions." Despite his choice of vocabulary, I said should a new car come with dents/scratches/impressions? No, your salesman put the license plate on and used screws that were too long and cracked my paint. I paid extra for the white paint, not so the salesman could mark his territory. I said I don't care if you repaint the bumper, or replace the bumper cover, but I want it fixed. He said he would talk to his General Manager and see what he had to say. General Manager agreed with the manager I was speaking with and claimed that it was not that big of a deal. I listened to what Bob had to say to me and I then asked Bob what he was going to do. I have brought in my car for 3 problems, without any resolved to me. Being in a managerial position, I don't want you to come to me with problems, I expect you to come to me with solutions! So far, you have only reinstated my problems back to me. He replied to me saying that if it was his car, he would not worry about it because it would be too hard to match the paint if they repainted it, and if I replaced the bumper it would not match with the rest of the paint on the car. After insisting that some kind of resolution be made, he denied any further resolutions and informed me that I should put my front license plate mounting bracket back on. I asked for his bosses name and number only to be told a name, followed by "hang up and call the front desk because he did not have his number in front of him." Then he hung up on me. Touche Toyota |
Who's your dealer? Koons in Westminster?
I'm starting to think that ALL dealers suck. I bought mine from Russell Toyota in Catonsville. Got it home, found a series of paint chips in the shape of a 1" square on the hood two days later when I washed it. It was the first sunny day after I bought it, and was the first time I got to see it in sunlight. I went back to the dealer, service dept refers me to the body shop, body shop takes a look and says it looks like damage from a bird dropping. (I don't think it is but whatever...) Body shop has to get an OK from General Sales Manager to repair it. I'm fully expecting to hear "sure Mr X, we'll take care of it". I get a call from the my salesman later that day who basically tells me that I had a chance to look the car over before I took it off the lot (not really, it was at dusk and the paint defect was not obvious in that light), and that if they had found the defect before I took delivery they would have fixed it and basically "too bad so sad". I think they knew there was a defect and were hoping that I wouldn't see it. So I call the body shop back and they tell me it will cost about $450 to re-paint the hood (clear coat) but they will do a touch-up job for free. So they ordered touch-up paint and filled the chips with touch-up. They gave me the touch up paint free of charge. Looks like hell but at least the chips are filled. They didn't even level it off and buff it. I'll do that when the weather gets better. I also contacted their customer service rep - but everything has to be approved by the general sales manager and there's no higher authority. After doing some looking online about the dealer and this general sales manager, it seems that he's a real prick - at least that's my opinion and the opinion of a few others who posted accounts of their dissatisfaction online. I got the impression that employees are afraid of him too. I'm not happy with the way the deal went down either. Same sales manager tried to up-charge the delivery fee and add a ridiculous dealer prep and would not honor the advertised price. I ended up getting a better deal after ****ering, but it wasn't the deal I expected and I should have just walked. Koons would have been my next choice. Sounds like they all suck. I fucking hate most car dealers. Edit: OK, why will the forum allow me to type "fucking" and not allow me to type "d i c k ering". Doesn't make a lot of sense! |
Hey man I've got the loud transmission noise as well. It turns out that it's most likely the clutch master & slave cylinder. An easy way to tell is to do a clutch bleed and the problem will temporarily go away or get a little better. You can also touch the top point of your transmission where the clutch arm meets the transmission. Just barely touching it with your finger makes the noise go away. Is it harder to shift for you too?
I just bought the replacement parts for it and I will let you know if this solves the problem. |
