Brake dust or rail dust? Dealership bs?

Hey guys as you know I had some pretty major spots all over my car, which upon more research and your guys help looked to be rail rust, one wash, all good.

Went into the dealership as I don't have a garage and this should've been done by them in the first place.

They told me it was brake dust. And is normal on all there white cars, and should come off with a good wash.. And will be an ongoing battle.

.... I haven't read anything about this, and you guys with white 86's seemed to not have the problem occur again..

Opinions, bullshit or fact?

I have a swp bro and thats removable, but if your car came like that new and just noticed it i would take it back and have it removed professionally but if your worried about them touching it its always better to do it yourself with a clay bar.

You should ask them how brake dust gets on the back of your trunk....

Muskokan 12-20-2013 06:09 PM

So you guys keep getting it after you wash?
My thinking from the other threads seemed like nobody got it back after.
And how long can I leave this crap on there for? It's in the - and we have 5 ft of snow so I'm not gunna be able to do anything for a while.

Maybe swp isn't all it's cracked up to be with salty roads.

White 86's in winter please chime in!

Thanks broski's

Well, my 9 month old, white, FR-S doesn't show those kind of spots.

I have a hard time believing it's brake dust.

Rail dust or settlings from dirty air .... maybe.

Like mentioned, a clay bar should take em out.

I have that very same BRZ (Pearl White, Limited, I assume you have stock brakes) and I have NEVER seen this on mine. And I do drive in a very "spirited" manner.

Granted, I'm in a different climate but that shouldn't make a difference. If anything, it should show even more (we hardly see any kind of precipitation between May and November).

Clay bar or any sort of decon product (Iron X comes to mind) should get it off with some elbow grease.

tennisfreak 12-21-2013 10:15 AM

I stopped using armor all on my vehicles period. Don't get that shit within ten feet of my vehicles anymore.

For interior cleaning and protecting I have now moved to Meguires Interior cleaner.

If your car was transported at any time on a train it has rail dust which turns to rail rust after being exposed to moisture. It happens to all cars but is most noticeable on white cars. All dealerships are aware of this and they have a mild, non harmful, acid wash to correct the problem. A few dealerships do it as part of the 'new car prep' and most don't. They will wait, hoping the customer doesn't complain.
