How strong is tranny?
 

Is it going to be anything like the STI's 6 speed? Thanks for the info.

The az6 is capable of being plenty strong but it depends on what they specified for its internals. Not enough info yet to provide a solid answer.

We don't know for sure yet but from what we know so far, it should be a decent transmission. You can see what other cars use the AZ6, they all hold power and abuse well.

the az6 is 80% different than the s2000's az6, so really its up in the air, we can only believe its stronger :D

look up is250 automatic transmissions, the A960E automatic is pretty reliable at stock power levels, not sure on what they can withstand, usually they can be reliable up to double the stock tq

for the manual (i keep seeing this transmission code pop up in the last few days ra62 and AZ6 transmission codes)

the RA62 was designed to be put in the tacoma and the fj cruiser(rwd versions), also it was designed around the supercharged versions of both cars, so its good to over 330lb-ft

so both transmissions should hold about 400 hp reliably for a while at least, as the car progresses we will see people break stuff and we will learn what exactly broke and what needed to be replaced to increase the maximum load of the transmissions :D

manual should be pretty bullet proof designed for a 330lb-ft engine on a 2 ton fj cruiser
that same transmission is going to be in a 2700lb car, so i could imagine higher torque capabilities

This is somewhat of an aside, but pertinent enough if we're going to start looking at how much power each transmission can handle. Kaizen Factor says that the transmission in the 86 coupes is not the RA62, but in fact the TL70, sharing a resemblance to the Aisin AZ6. The AZ6 should serve as a starting point for determining how much the 86's transmission can handle, but even then, it's assuredly been modified to the point that we won't be able to know anything with certainty until either someone more knowledgeable chimes in or someone breaks one.

Interesting article, I hadn't seen that before. However the article failed to point out that the ratios appear to be exactly the same as on the S15... which I think is an important bit.

HKS offers a "6 speed Transmission upgrade from the Silvia S15"....The silvia S15's transmission was notoriously fragile....There's your indication..

I mean I wouldn't have thought it would have taken that much effort to create good shift feel.

You'd think they'd start with an AZ6, but it sounds like they started with a J160 went to replacing 80% of an RA62 to make it feel like an AZ6. Which should be called a TL70.

we won't know how strong the tranny is until we get our hands on one and use it, that goes for transmissions too.
