Break in complete!
 

So I just finished my break in period :happyanim:

I got an e-mail from the dealership saying I was due for a service appointment despite only getting the car a month ago and only have 1000 miles on the car...I called and asked them and they didn't seem to know why I got the e-mail...hmm whatever I guess.

My question is to the users of this forum who know more about the FR-S than the dealership I got it from: is there anything special I should do now that it's broken in? (replace break-in oils, etc)?

No. The break-in oil should actually stay in until your first recommend oil change. By recommended, I mean what Scion recommends. Not your dealer and not FT86club. :)

It is highly suggested that you change your oil soon after break-in. I unfortunately did not do this, however, I didn't receive any negative issues to the car and it runs perfect - perhaps I got lucky? who knows *shrugs*

I have also read that it is good to replace the transmission fluid as well.

This is not according to Scion's user guide. This is more of a general consensus that I have seen in various threads. Since March 2013, I have been on this forum (another user name) and from what I have read (in general) is that most people do the early oil changes themselves or at a shop after break in i.e. after you pass 1,000 miles on the ODO.

Personally, for my car, I did not do the early oil change, and I got mine changed by Toyota @ 7,000 miles. I have had no engine or transmission problems/abnormalities what so ever.

In the context of someone who is a heavy driver (drives a lot) or does a lot of track/auto cross, then I could see how changing the oil every 3,000 miles would be worth it in the long run.

Changing the oil early of course won't hurt. So it is a question whether it is worthwhile to spend the money/effort to do it. To show it necessary, you have to provide evidence that somebody who did not do it got a damaged engine, which I have never seen. I have an MDX bought new and I changed its oil first time after 5k. It has been 7 years and the car is super reliable.

That been said, I will do a early oil change at about 2k miles for BRZ, simply because Subaru's reputation in reliability is not up there with Honda. I decide to pay for the cost, even though I am not convinced at all that it is necessary.

You ever think it's because maybe it's not absolutely necessary to change engine oil right after the break-in period?

General consensus or not, the factory fill engine oil doesn't absolutely need to come directly after break in. Sure, people feel comfortable doing it - more power to them but it isn't necessary.

At the end of the day, people will change their oil and other fluids at intervals that they are comfortable with and each of those person(s) will argue that their way is right.

Haha good stuff.... Did you even read what I said? This is a forum. Obviously it is preference, hence why I said "highly suggested" and not "absolutely necessary" - maybe you should stop all the :bonk: before hitting 'submit' :P

I was arguing the fact that you felt "lucky" in some way. You weren't lucky. You changed your oil at a mileage interval that was within manufacturer standards. There is no luck involved. lol.

It was a bit of sarcasm mixed exaggeration when I meant "lucky". As to say, with all these people ranting about how important it is to change oil early early early, I must have been 'lucky' since I chose not to haha. cheers man

Based on the fact that I've read probably every FRS oil thread that exists, what I've gathered is that it seems that the facctory fill oil has a lot of additives and moly that are good for break-in, and that break in continues even after 1000 miles..and that you'd be fine to keep it in there for even 7500 miles. Change it when you feel like, but it's not gonna hurt either way. What you need to do for sure, is go drive the shit out of it and carve some canyons :)

Interestingly, I have owned two Honda Civic Type R's before and in the manuals it explicitly states that the factory fill should not be changed prematurely.

If I am not mistaken, Honda uses Idemitsu oil as their factory fill as well as with the 86 / BRZ's

That's BS... The factory fill is good oil with lots of moly from assembly lubes..
Running the factory fill to 7500 miles is not going to cause any issues.. Or maybe you just got lucky.. Lol..
