Coolant low (when engine is hot)

I remember checking a few months ago and the coolant was about mid-way up the overflow tank, but I don't remember if it was on a hot engine or not.

However, I checked today, on a hot engine, and the coolant was at the low line.

I'll have to top up no matter what, but has anyone else experienced this? I hope I'm not burning coolant............:(

Cold engine, coolant should be somewhere between the low mark and halfway to full.
Hot engine, coolant should be somewhere between halfway and the full mark.
This is normal.
