First Drive in the Snow
 

Just drove home in the snow from the Flemington area (Central NJ). Overall it was a success. As others have mentioned, it handled beautifully for a lightweight, RWD sports car. Roads were all cover until I got on 202 and even that still had a lot of snow. Even with stock tires, I didn't have any handling issues on the untouched back roads I was on.

Yea here in queens nyc we are getting light flurries..car is handling pretty well on the stock Michelins...itz not as bad as I thought..im on my way to storing her away for winter in my parents garage.

Just attempted to drive in 2-3" we got here in Philly. I can't even get outta my parking spot. Those 245 summer performances are useless in the snow. So I promptly hopped in my Forester lol

That's not a snow covered road, that's a sprinkle.

With actual snow as a base, the stocks will be useless.

Everyone has to learn at their own pace I guess.

just because you made it home okay now on stock tires, doesn't mean its okay

these tires make the car unpredictable, and because it isn't cold enough yet the surfaces aren't as slick as they would be if it were the appropriate temperature outside.

please, at the VERY least get a decent all season tire. or leave the brz at home.

i have Blizzaks, and it still is not ideal.

I agree with you. Today for the first time driving home on fresh snow, I had a horrible time trying to get home. I literally would have to go into different plazas to prevent traffic, and on top of that going into my driveway took me 5-10 minutes. Definitely getting new tires, or a different car.

I have Dunlop Winter sport M3s on in the OEM size and the car keeps you on edge. Ditch your stock tires ASAP if driving in the winter.

I really don't recommend the Dunlops. I was much happier with the Cheap General Altimax Artics on my Evo 8 and even happier than that with the Blizzaks on my STi. Figured I'd try the Dunlops because I was so happy with the Star Specs but if I were to do it again I'd go else where.....

You're going to want to throw some weight in the trunk as well! I haven't yet and the ass end wants to kick out on you.

On a positive note, the BRZ started just fine at -21F yesterday morning...

And you NEED weather techs if you're going to be driving it year round.

Absolutely. I'm not suggesting that anyone go zipping around on stocks with more than an inch or so on the ground. Even with a nice set of Winter tires...

Just from reading other posts, people make it seems driving in the snow/rain with stock tires = instant death. Although, most of these posts come from people/places where snow is not a common occurrence. I was just surprised how well they actually did. That doesn't mean that I'm not going to invest in a decent set of Winters.

I also understand that this is just a light dusting and not a serious accumulation. I grew up in the Northeast so I'm no stranger to snow...but I am more accustomed to navigating it with a truck so this was a new experience. Wish I could park my BRZ for the Winter, but it's my DD.

If you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for your tires? I heard many good things about Dunlops, Altimax, and Blizzaks now I got to do some more research on which to buy.

also, throw a bag of kitty litter in your trunk. if you ever get stuck, throw some on the snow and under your tires, will help get traction.

general altimax and blizzak ws70 are great tires. i have the ws70, HOWEVER they are simply too soft. i spin them in any gear under partial throttle, and they are ultra soft so when its dry, it feel like you're floating.

the general altimax's are the same. they are extremely soft. you cannot compare a 3500 AWD car to a light RWD car…its not the same.

next season i will be most likely getting Nokain WR-G2 or pirelli sottozero II (what i had on my sti)

Spinning my WS3D on the 1-2 shift is hilariously epic. Makes me feel like #dattorque but really it's just a softy soft compound. Less so than the above compounds, but still.
