Can the new emissions standards for 2011 alter the ft-86

Here is a link about the new Canada and U.S joint emissions standard

Do you guys think that because of this new standard on new cars from 2011, will alter the performance of the ft-86?

i don't really think so. i think the engineers at Toyota are smart enough to get it to ~200hp and still pass any emissions standards in the foreseeable future.

Im sure the way Toyota is engineering this motor will be aimed towards efficiency (making power efficiently as well as MPG). I don't see how many changes they could really make right away anyways. Before they force everyone to build these efficient machines R&D needs to be done. that could be a couple years yet.

As far as companies like Toyota, Honda etc etc are concerned its just forcing the competition to be "more like me".

300+hp Mustang V6 gets 31MPG. FT-86 is Boxer4 and will be slower, so there is no reason they can't pass emission and efficient with 200+hp.

The mustang also has a much larger 3.7L motor, i.e. much lower power density.

If its emissions I dont think so, Subaru has PZEV technology to draw from, and Im sure toyota has some tricks up their sleeve too. The STi has managed to stay at 300hp since 2004 and almost every year it has more emissions tweaks and equipment on it, so Im not worried about the emissions part.

now...

MPG is another story, have you seen that the new Federal CAFE standards is 34.1 mpg by 2016.

Yes, it was released on april fools but its not a joke:cry:

I think Toyota make enough Corollas, Yarii, Prius & soon the iQ to be able to not have to stress the mpg count THAT much.

mrtodd 04-05-2010 02:16 AM

Haha. Yarii.

Such a silly little car........yet so much cooler/better than that stupid, pig heavy Honda CRZ.

Anyway, back on topic. I agree with what everyone else said, I really don't see this being a problem for Toyota & Subaru. Like Tougerenner said, Subaru already has the boxer running @ the PZEV standards. The rednecks made the beastly Mustang V6 get over 30MPG, shoot even the LS3 pushrod powered Corvette is getting 26mpg.

I think Toybaru can meet the new emissions standards without breaking a sweat.
