GPS (Canadian) is driving me insane!

For the Canadian BRZ owners out there, did anyone have an issue of the GPS unit giving completely wrong instructions?

My first unit gave me bad instructions (i.e. telling me to go South for a location that I know for a fact to be North by about 25km), and it did this for multiple addresses.

I finally brought the car in for a quick factory reset (which I had actually done myself as well) but it did nothing to fix the situation.
I finally brought the car in to the dealership today for a full GPS replacement (had my oil changed while I was there) - so after sitting in the dealership for over 2 hours, I got my car back to find... the exact same thing was happening!

My sales rep mentioned that some customers had paid ~$200 to upgrade the unit with new maps etc. and that this fixed the bulk of the issues, but in my mind, there is no reason why I should have to pay anything to 1) get the unit working the way it is supposed to, and 2) get maps which are not from 2011, given that the car was purchased in mid 2013.

Anybody have a similar issue?

Signal is fine - the maps work fine if I'm just driving around (i.e. the location isn't off), it's just that using the navigation functions will lead me on wild goose chases.

I've sent a message to Subaru Canada, but I am not optimistic that they'll respond by fixing this or upgrading the unit...

I have a Pioneer AVIC 930BT (similar to the OEM Subaru Unit) and I paid to upgrade the maps and software. Like the dealership suggested, it is much better. Don't bother being the squeaky wheel, the software upgrade is from Pioneer directly and Subaru won't paid a 3rd party vendor. Unfortunately, I lost the SD card upgrade and have to buy it again for my BRZ.

You can get a non OEM Pioneer version on ebay for a fraction of the cost.

It's bad, very bad. Out here we don't need it as the roads are all at 90 degrees. Even in the dark it's hard to stay lost for long!

OK, at least it isn't just me.... misery loves company I guess...
Pretty shoddy stuff - I know we have phones and everything, but if I paid for the navi, I'd expect it to work somewhat properly (not even talking about the circa 2011 maps)

Mine has been pretty good for directions and I use it a lot. I mostly use it in the city or just on the outskirts though. I find that it badly outdated where I actually live.

The one thing that annoys the hell out of me is when you miss a turn (especially when driving downtown Toronto) it gets all confused and takes FOREVER to recalculate a route. By the time it finds the new route, you've already missed another turn.

It's no better in the U.S.

I also use it all the time in Toronto. I have had no problems with it so far.

I hope everything works out for you and it gets figured out!

Thanks but meh I'm not even trying to get it fixed. It's a so-so system and I've come to accept it. I'll upgrade to a better HU later down the road.

This is true. I've used the US OEM nav (now standard on the Canadian '14 BRZ's) and it made me want to gouge my eyes out.

Yea I use mine in Toronto and no problems really, it does kinda get confused getting off the. 401.

Atleast it's not as ugly as the American head unit ;p

If you are up for a moderate challenge, there are GREAT instructions in the DIY section on how to update your maps (for free!) as well as the firmware on the head unit to remove the nanny warnings and unlock the ability to input information while the ebrake is off.

It took me about 1 hour to complete after doing all the reading and getting everything downloaded. Pretty easy though, I'd highly recommend it.

Yep. At the Canadian ones apologize for it.

I made a thread on contacting Subaru of America to get them to pay for map upgrades since my 2013 car came with old 2011 maps. If you let them know there are significant problems with your stock maps they SHOULD reimburse you for a downloaded upgrade/newer version once you e-mail them the receipt. Get permission first before you download the maps. Ask them specifically for reimbursement.

E-mailed Subaru.
Basically, they said "too bad" - looks like I'll be doing the upgrade with those instructions.
And writing an angry letter to Subaru.

But that's about it...
