Interview with Tetsuya Tada (Toyota 86 Project Chief Engineer) (from Las Vegas event)
K, here's an interview vid I made. It's only <4mins along, but interview itself went about 20mins. I only put few stuff in the vid. When time is right, I'll post more vids.
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97ISMCrXIAE"]Interview with Mr. Tetsuya Tada, Chief Engineer of Toyota 86, Scion FR-S, Subaru BRZ Cars - YouTube[/ame] VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: Question 2. When I ask Tada-san about Targa & Hatch. I told him that, "Targa & hatch have been pretty popular along the forum. Some said, if 86 comes out in targa/hatch, they're willing to fork out the money to buy em. In next gen 86, if you can consider talking about it in your team about targa and hatch options." SO PLEASE DON'T CONFUSE THAT TARGA & HATCH WILL COME OUT. YES, THAT INCLUDES YOU GUYS AUTO BLOGGERS! DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT WRITING SOME BOGUS ARTICLE SAYING "Toyota is making targa and hatch 86." I just wanted to make clear on the Question 2. As for the bonus part Tada-san was talking about is mostly aero & chassis parts. Good example is Door Stabilizer. He mentioned about few other parts, but I'll discuss about it with you guys. ;) UPDATE 1: As you requested it's time to spill more info I think, it's about good time to spill em out now. Yes, you're dead on! They already shown door stabilizer. He said that, door stabilizer will come with few different thickness for you needs. Also lil canards will be used to adjust the aerodynamic of the car and airflow. It's not a regular canard either. Let me see here's a good example pic http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7253/6...7d3380e3_c.jpg It's kinda hard to see it but that canard have been tested & proven to be very effective. He's planning to make it that you can install em in different areas of the car. He said that they test em out and said that by installign it in different areas of car (include underside too), it can improve the braking time, turning speed, at the same time, installing in wrong area can make the car shake like crazy, and so on. He also mention that, by using these parts, forum members can discuss about where they installed it and what effect did on their driving (improved/worse) and bring car tuning more exciting. He said that, these parts aren't expensive (like Headers, cams & some aero parts) and it'll improve more than some fake parts. I think, he said few other stuff lined up for tuning parts... but he didn't say all of em. I just got maybe 20% of stuff he have plan to release UPDATE 2: Now, there are another mod for intake too (sound enhancer). You can change the sound by changing the sound enhancer filter. So if you want the silent quiet, you can. If you want loud, you can. You just change the filter. |
Thanks to Ichi for the awesome coverage! :party0030:

Tada-san looks like such a cool guy...
I'm glad you did the interview in Japanese, Ichi! It really got his points across better than they would have been if he spoke in English! The Chris Harris review was kind of confusing, lol... |

Yeah, I've notice that, when they try to interview Tada-san in English, I've hard time too. So used my Japanese skill (kind of) and interview him. So he can explain better with Japanese  |

Great stuff! I know I'll probably get sh@t on by the purists for asking this, but was anything mentioned about an F/I factory version in the near future?
|
I'm happy I got alot from the interview especially is thoughts and appreciation about the forum. Tada-san seems to be very mellow and chill.
|
Thanks for sharing, much appreciated :)

Thanks for all the great coverage. I cannot WAIT to get my own FR-S. Come on July!
|
Thanks Ichi!
I wish I had a chance to chat with him, he seems like an interesting guy to just sit back and have a beer with. Looking forward to more. |
Thank you for the excellent interview Ichi and I'm sure you conveyed FT86Club's immense thanks and gratitude to Tada-sama for his role in developing this car!
I can't wait to hear more and finally get to drive/own one. |
Hi folks,
I've followed this forum for months and gotta say this is a really good site; hats off to admin. I work in marketing and would like to share my views on this particular topic regarding power mods. I personally think that scion/toyota won't be releasing faster versions of the fr-s/gt 86, (at least for the western markets) but instead concentrate on aftermarket performance mods. There are a number of a reasons for this but mainly I suspect it will be because of the pricing constraints as well as discontent from fans who have already purchased the initial n.a batch. Subaru may well introduce a higher powered naturally aspirated STI version, but only in limited numbers and as a much more focused set up. As there are already TRD distribution channels in the US, I don't think the same will happen for the UK or European markets. Maybe a collaboration with the likes of Cosworth to provide tuning parts. |
well done!

I would have given him a big thanks and congratulations for FINALLY bringing a sports car back to Toyota, and asked just one question: TRD Supercharger - when?
|
did you show him/ask him about your hothatch photoshop?

So for the bonus question, Tada-San mentioned about lots of factory tuning parts, and they want us to make our unique FR-S upon release. I wonder if there will be a full catalog of all the bits and pieces available for customization, even at port delivery.
Hmm.. the future is interesting. |

that's an interesting concept though, using aero parts to adjust understeer/oversteer balance to your liking... i'm guessing canards and wings? |

lol i think ichi's first post makes it quite clear that tada-san is only saying he will consider making a targa or hatch in the future and nothing's set in stone. i thought it was interesting that he said the mk I looked too FF-like. i had to find a side profile shot of the mk I and compare it to the production FRS side to side a couple times.
