Rubber smell sometimes on cold start

Anyone else notice a strong rubber smell when starting the car in the morning in cold weather? It happens as soon as I start the car and before I even begin to move. After a minute or 2 of driving, it goes away completely.

Any ideas?

I should note that the only mods I have are an Invidia fp, Invidia N1 catback, an AEM intake and a stage 2 FA20Club tune.

.

No rubber smell here.

However, I always have an idea (most of which don't work); you might check the serpentine belt tension when it's cold .... before you crank er up. Maybe the tensioner pulley sticks a bit when it's cold ....;)

Well, honestly, it wasn't like that from the factory and it didnt start happening until I installed my exhaust and tune (did at about the same time, so not sure exactly when it happened). I can't imagine either of those having anything to do with this, though so I am at a loss.

I have the same smell! Only when air is on. Not so much rubber as plastic? Mix of the two? I can't figure it out. Had my exhaust on for a couple months now and been fine in other cold-weather. Just today.

Hmm... I never really paid attention to if the air was on when it happened...

Called a Toyota tech. Said it might be transmission fluid leaking on the exhaust

Well, mine definitely doesnt smell like tranny fluid and there are no drips, so that's not the case for me.

Some new exhaust will smell for awhile until they are broken in. They are covered in a light oil to revent corrosion.

Also, look for plastic on they system, you may have run over a plastic bag and it's melting.

Normally good points, but in either case the smell would be more apparent when the vehicle is warmed up rather than on cold start.

I would lean more towards the tensioner/belt theory. Is there any belt squeal, even just a brief chirp, when the car is started?

Its def not the exhaust oils. I had that for a while, but its gone now. There is 0 squeak or squeel on startup
