FR-S/BRZ vs 2013 Porsche 911 Turbo

I got an opportunity to briefly drive a friend's relatively new 911 Turbo last weekend for about 10 miles. This was by far the fastest car I have ever driven - my distant second place being a STI. The rush you get when you're on the throttle past 3000RPM to redline is indescribable. There is just SOOO much power and torque compared to our twins (and 99.9% of cars out there). I didn't get a chance to take any high speed turns but steering felt great as expected. Obviously, the interior was beautiful inside (the car does cost $160k+). Exhaust note on the 911 Turbo was perfect and for the most part quieter than my FR-S with aftermarket exhaust - made me feel like a wannabe kid racer but I still like how my MXP exhaust sounds. Somewhat surprisingly, driving position and feel between the two in the cockpit were quite similar. Steering wheel size, position, and weight was actually comparable. The Porsche had the automatic paddle-shifters so I can't comment on how great the manual gearbox was. However, in my brief time with the Porsche and trying to recall when I test drove a FR-S AT, paddle shift feel and speed in full manual mode was not drastically different. But oh my god, the power in the 911 Turbo was ridic! I think it solidified my decision to get the Innovate S/C and intercooler once they get their CARB-approval. Great to finally personally compare & contrast two great cars - one just costs 1/8 of the other one.

We're received a hand full of the new 911 Turbo S's at the Porsche dealership I work for. The PDK transmission is simply awesome. I'm a three-pedals guy and always will be but the PDK will make you reconsider the "auto" decision; well' you don't have a choice as that's the only transmission available for the Turbo S and GT3.

Did you feel the difference with the rear-steering? The 911 Turbo always raises the bar when they release a new model. BTW, they start at $181k but all the ones we've received (all pre-sold), are a few dollars shy of the $200k mark.

Didn't really drive it enough to really notice the rear wheel steering. Honestly, not even sure if it was a normal Turbo or a Turbo S, but he did say price paid was about $160k about a year ago so I'm assuming just the Turbo. I have the 3-pedal FR-S but the Porsche I drove did have the fancy PDK. I'm sure the Turbo S would have blown my socks off even more so than the regular Turbo.

I have to say, I'm a bit jealous. I haven't had a chance to drive any Porsche more powerful than a Carrera S, and I'm sure it's an awesome experience. That having been said, I almost think the exhaust tone on the Turbos is a bit too muted - I like the sound on the N/A Porsches better. The Cayman S/Boxster S/Carrera S sound better, IMHO, and my personal favorite for sound in the entire Porsche line is the GT3. Still, I'm sure the power was amazing, and I hope to get a chance to drive something like that sometime. How was the turbo lag, out of curiosity?

The power and in the new Turbo S is so linear, it's awesome. It just continues to pull until you give up.

You guys should hear the Carrera GT we installed AVO straight pipes on. I personally think it sounds better than the couple of LFA's we have running around in town.
