PRE turbo kit (garrett GT3076R)
So I finally made my FI decision today after riding along the PRE shop car, to put a down payment on the FI turbo kit that PRE is offering.
I will be running low boost until I gradually build up the supporting mods. Initially it will be 5 or 7 psi, and their stock shop car pulled 288whp. With me being an auto, and not having a 3in exhaust (2.5in), I think realistic numbers will be around 240whp. More than enough on my shitty tires, and crappy PNW weather. It is not IC'd, but with such low boost, they didn't see IAT's over 101F after countless hard dyno pulls. Most temps were around 98F I guess. Of course once we start cranking up the boost, we will need an IC. There will be more updates to this kit as spring/summer comes along. I like it that I can work in steps, since I am more of a progression mod guy. Next step will be WMI. Then to IC. The setup they have is no BOV for low boost, external waste gate dump, and the intake will be modified to be fitted inside the front bumper rather than sucking the hot air from the engine bay (current setup). The exhaust manifold is an EL (but not 100% EL). The turbo is the Tomioka turbo housing Garett GT30R ball bearing. The fact that they don't have an IC right now, the boost kicks in much sooner and essentially no boost lag. This will change once the IC will go in. With such low boost, the turbo isn't working hard at all, and the temps are not rising to dangerous levels. I'm sure many of you guys saw the dyno sheet on FB, but with such smooth power delivery, it almost feels like a SC. full boost at 3600rpm, peak torque at 3800rpm. Very drivable, and good for drifting. Main reason I chose this kit was convenience and most likely reliability. This is their inhouse kit, with their name on it. They will stand by it. Also they are 20 minutes away from me. I will miss the UEL boxer sound, but apparently its not so great with a FI build (exhaust pulse etc.). They will showcase the shop BRZ at that toy drive thing on Friday, unfortunately I will be gone so I cannot attend. Hope you guys get a chance to take a look at it, and see what you think! |
oh and btw, don't write anything about this kit on my FB page. not wanting my Fiance to know for now. Don't want to deal with that shit during holiday season.

Shit too late..... sorry kohei jkjk

Hell yeah Kohei! So many of us are going FI. This is just awesome. Your turn @indesign & @stockysnail

The down side is, if/when she finds out, after you are married ..... it will cost you a whole house full of new furnature .... :sigh: humfrz |

Good choice. I was going to go in that direction originally, but with an IC (PRE doing all the work). Obviously I chose a diff plan. ;)

Why not just buy a new one? I mean he did have problems with it right.

A word on hiding mods from your Lady, don't do it unless you like the car more than her
Good luck on the new set up, I saw the shop car last week |

Stuff the turbo kit and all the parts under the bed. Then one morning pull it out and say "Oh! There's that turbo kit I bought years ago, I forgot all about it. Maybe I'll go ahead and install it now!"
It worked for me with my old GF and my expensive model airplanes lol. |
^ Good advice!
I went FI. Have not looked back since. Have fun cause you will! |
Kohei good choice on the FI but not a good choice to hide it from the soon to be wife. Got to be honest with her and just say hey i spent 4k on my car because i wanted to. Take the bumps and bruises when she throws shit at you and calls you names but at least you can say i was honest and didn't hide it!! It's not like your gambling away the rent money, at least i hope your not using your rent money on the FI!!!

Spend the money while she doesn't have clear line of sight of the finances. I have been married 12 years. The wife and I still have separate credit cards and checking accounts. We opened our first joint account 2 years ago. . . .

I guess i got lucky, my wife doesn't care what i spend our money on as long as the bills are paid. But like the wife says what ever i spend on car parts she gets to spend on shoes and purses good thing she doesn't know how much car parts really cost!!! |
thanks for the marriage advice. My finances are fine.
Its that fine line between telling her how many shits you took today and what color/consistency. Some things are not worth telling imo. Yea if this was part of the wedding fund or something, that will be an issue. Its my play money, and explaining a FI kit to a girl, and justifying its cost/risk/fun etc., is very difficult. |

I'm kinda with NickFRS. My wife and I have separate accounts, income and expenses. We don't give each other permission for anything and yet we respect each other and our decisions (as long as they don't adversely affect the other).
That said... When I upgraded the exhaust on my FRS, she said: "Hey I want a little more power too!" (referring to her MX5) I'm a lucky man! :-) |

This is going pretty off topic now, but the issue isn't in the current. Its lies in the future. People change all the time, I've seen hardcore religious people lose faith and become atheists, quiet person to party animal in their 30's, party animal to bible thumper, etc. We change all the time, and part of the reason for a high divorce rate is people growing out of each other. Its not just drugs, adultery, financial issues that can break up a married couple, like in the tabloids or movies. Sometimes views change, and priorities may change as well. Ultimately to keep it work, it is an substantial sacrifice, to change your personal views (throw away religion, political views etc) to accommodate the other or else you will need to part ways.
Especially when your young, I changed the most from 22 ~ 28 imo. |
Update: So the car will not be finished today as planned, pretty standard for modding not completing on time. I added a few more extra parts in, which may have costed more time. Dyno tuning will not start until Monday. If not finished Monday, it will be after Christmas/New years time which realistically I'm thinking 12/30 ish now.
Pretty bummed out since I wanted to take to the 86 Christmas party :( Boost gauge and tranny cooler was the additional parts to the kit. |
Sorry BRZPDX! :-(

Stage 2 will be water/air IC and push the boost up to 9 psi hopefully, which will hit the 300whp mark I'm assuming. Beyond that, the rear axle will start to take a beating as well as the AT tranny. Clutch packs and maybe a 400rpm ish increase in the stall TQ converter, and BBK will be recommended. Stage 3 will be Meth injector kit to push it to 350whp to 400, at this point, the motor should be rebuilt or lower the compression rate slightly. Carbon fiber drive shaft, and heavy suspension work, bigger radiator and fan, cold temp spark plugs and at this point I will probably need a BOV. |
Well bummer on the extra time but we know PRE will get it right when finished
|
Pushed out another few days due to the MAF sensor maxing out at max rpm. It will throw a code with a 2.75" intake. We are going to fabricate a custom 3" intake to see if this will resolve the issue. Also even with the upgraded wastegate spring, its still creeping up boost, but should be able to control it to around 5 ~ 6psi max. Thank god for the boost gauge I had them installed lol. They have not released how much power I'm pushing until the tune is finalized.
I'm still debating if I should get a scangauge or get a cheap android tablet to run the Torque app (got the magnetic phone/table holder for Christmas) to keep an eye on oil temp/IAT. You think reading the AFR would be pretty important too? In which order do you think the importance will be? Oil temp, pressure, boost, IAT, AFR, EGT? |
Get the android tablet or the p3cars gauge

You can find a sub-$100 android tablet at many different online retailers. Any cheap one with Bluetooth will do. |
awesome, yea I see a bunch of $69.99 ~ $99 tablets with BT and Android OS. I guess the lightest/skinniest one will do. Ipad mini will be pretty baller though.. I wonder if DashCommand is as good as Torque.

My suggestion is to pick up a 1st or 2nd gen nexus 7 either new or used depending on how much you want to spend. Swappa.com is a good place to pick one up used. |

Maybe you can advise us a bit further on why a Google Nexus 7 tablet is better at the intended use than a cheaper Android 4.1+ tablet..? |
