Toyota refused to change my oil
 

Toyota called me last week and said they wanted to get my car in for an oil change and tire rotation. I kindly told them I only had 3,400 miles, but they insisted that I bring it in since I've had it nearly six months. This made me a little happy, I was planning on changing it myself but hey, it's free...


Drove about a half hour to the dealership, real cute girl complimented my car when I pulled it into the service station (apparently complimenting her yoga pants wasn't as flattering for her, but I digress lol).


After about a half hour wait, the service tech approached me and said they wouldn't change the oil because it wasn't 7,500. I laughed, and informed them of my conversation with their employee who insisted I bring it in.


Long story short, they said they won't change it unless it's closer to a year or 7,500 miles. Furthermore, they looked at me like I was on crack when I asked what type of oil they use (found their literature that states its OEM Toyota) and they said "I think so" when asked if they were replacing the crush washer. The tech went on to say that it was only the second '86 they had seen, and that they were VERY unfamiliar with the platform (AKA get your car out of here before we fuck something up).


Needless to say, I WILL NOT bring my '86 to the stealership unless it's a warranty issue. Based on how they handle something as trivial as changing my oil, I don't even know how I feel about them handling any warranty issues. I'm at a point where I would almost rather pay out of pocket and have my mechanic replace whatever breaks with something of higher quality.


Thanks for hearing my rant. I guess I am a little cheesed that they made me bring my car in, only to tell me to go home.

Interesting, as I just received an email from my dealer advising that I may be due for my first scheduled maintenance, but reviewing the Subaru manual, it ONLY mentions mileage, rather than months. My first scheduled maintenance shows 7,500, but no month alternative.

I'm on my 2nd oil change and I have 6k on it. They didn't care .

Subaru has a different plan than toyota, but do the first oil change at 3500-3700 for free.

Pretty sure the break-in oil is not synthetic, but the regular oil for the cars IS synthetic.

just do it with your own.

They definitely can do it for you because I did the same. All they have to do is to put in on to their record as if they did it in 7,500 mi. Its kind of stupid that they refuse to do it.....

It comes with synthetic from the factory AFAIK.

I wouldn't even bother with warranty issue if I were you. I would call and find other Toyota dealer that has experience with these cars.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think the cars come with "break in" oil from the factory, not sure if it's synthetic or not, but usually break-in oil is dino oil, not as slippery, which helps with the rings seating.

After break-in, the oil is definitely synthetic.

Orbital is correct. The break-in oil from the factory is Idemitsu synthetic oil.

In Canada it's every 6 months regardless of mileage or every 8,000 km if you get there before 6 months is up. Guess we qualify as a severe service climate.

My dealership gave me the oil & filter so I could do it myself. They just wrote it up like they did it. That way i could rotate the tires when I had it on my lift. Win for everybody!

Sad to hear all that but I can tell you the service interval on the oil change is 7,500 miles for an FR-S. Also the oil used in the car is 0W20 which is a standard Toyota 10k mile oil for most of Toyota's newer vehicles with this car also falling in the category. And yes there is a Subaru crush washer that should be used when they install the new oil filter. We are supposed to give it out everytime we bill these oil changes thru the parts department. Part number is SU003-02159 i believe.(not a big deal you should know that number) As for taking the car to another mechanic...as long as you are within warranty mileage I WOULD NOT advise it though obviously its your choice. I give the techs credit for being honest about not seeing many but fact is, if they WERE to ruin it you have grounds for them to fix it free as long as they did the work shown on the paperwork. Things happen where ppl have been turned away (shit can always happen) but even so I would stick with yer dealer as longs as its warranty. If yer paying out of pocket anyway then thats another story.

I had a Toyota Dealer that gave me a time about my Tacoma Oil Change because I had only 1800mi in the first six months I had the Truck. They said to bring it back at the one year point and they would do it then. Well at the one year point I still had barely 3000 mi and I insisted and had a friend that worked there make sure that they did it along with the Tire rotation it was due.
But you should get a time with bringing your vehicle in for periodic services that you've paid for at the time of purchase.
