Why aren't lug bolt patterns standardized???

Automobiles have been around since 1886, please somebody create industry standards for 4-bolt, 5-bolt, 8-bolt, etc. lug bolt patterns!

1) metric vs standard measuring systems
2) different weight requirements = different bolt pattern requirements
