canyon roads near tustin / irvine

So, I moved here from Atlanta about a month ago and am looking for some driving roads to checkout on the weekends. I have already hit the 74 (ortega hwy) and will be making regular trips there, but looking for others too.

Preferably within an hours drive on an early sunday morning from the intersection of the 5 and 55.

Glendora Mountain Road is 20-30 miles away from you, Palomar is 60-70, both are pretty fun roads to drive.

And don't forget taking Santiago Canyon / Live Oak Canyon to/from the Ortega run between Tustin and RSM.

is this an open route? no tolls? any cops patrol the area routinely? i don't drive fast, but i am front plate less.

^ They're regular roads, but I don't like them. Santiago Canyon has very few turns, it's too fast of a road IMHO. Live Oak on the other hand is a twisty fun road, but sees too much traffic, even at night.

I recommend San Gabriel Canyon (<45 min from your location) into Glendora Mountain Road. After driving up the backside of GMR, you can take the short way home (frontside GMR) or take the road to Mt baldy.

Highway 74 is boring after GMR(Glendora mountain road)...

Wow, that's a great site (lateralg.org). Too bad there's no way to highlight all those stretches in the Nav...

Not per se, but you do have the option to highlight your course using the "trip monitor": http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showp...&postcount=768 via

How to record and export a driving track if you have the BRZ Navigation HU:
0. In the Nav Map screen when the vehicle is stopped:
1. Menu > More > Trip Monitor > Record Track
2. Drive
3. When you are done with your drive that you wanted to record a track of
4. Menu > More > Trip Monitor > Stop Recording Track
5. When you get home:
6. Menu > More > Trip Monitor > Save/Export Tracks as GPX
7. Audio > Settings > Eject SD card
8. Plug the SD card into a reader on your PC
9. Copy the exported .gpx file from the SD card "tracks" dir to your PC
10. Open the GPX file in Google earth or directly into google maps via GPX Visualizer link:
http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/
11. Remember to return the SD card to your BRZ Nav HU otherwise the Nav part won't work.

Probably sounds more complicated above than it really is, but it's easy after you do it the first time.

Really impressed that the Subaru Nav includes this Nav track export feature since that is one of my favorite things to do with my Garmin GPSes in the past whenever I am out scouting some twisty roads so I will be able to find them next time.

And/or add maybe the starting/ending locations of each canyon using '"Alert Points": http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=33450

Happy Driving :burnrubber:
