New 510 concept (Nissan IDx)
|
It is apparently Nissan's answer to the 86. NISMO version is supposed to have a 1.6l engine. I wonder if this concept is too retro for the younger audience they would pitch this at?
Edit: Does anyone else think it looks like a cross between a modern Camaro and tC? |

I agree, I think it will look to retro for the younger age groups to like it compared to the styling to the FR-S/BRZ. It's to square and bold for my taste. I read rumors about 2 options for the powerplant. 4 pot turbo & V6. |

At first I thought is kind of weird looking until I watched the creation video. I like it. If they keep the price under 20,000 it should do rather well with attracting younger buyers. I would have been all over this 4-5 years ago.

Awesome!

Is this the same as the Z35 concept or is this another RWD car to slot in under the next Zed? Rumors were we would be seeing the 370Z replacement at this show too.
|
This is the entry-level FT86 challenger that was rumored. I'm glad Nissan went back 40 years and pulled out the 510, and even made the Nismo version stunning!
My hope: 1.6L turbo for overseas market... and perhaps a 1.6L I-4 turbo + destroked VQ engine as an option. Either way, it's a good time to be an enthusiast! -alex |
It does look pretty good but might be a little under powered for the things in it's class for what's out now; like the Mini, FR-S,
|
if it ends up looking more like the 510 I will buy it. but only because the 510 is one of my dream cars.
|
i like it. adds a nice touch to the market. im sure nissan enthusiasts will love it. not everyone has the dough to purchase a Z, even though the price is being axed. the styling is retro and bold. light and fun is apparent here.
|
Unless they are doing something like bringing back the S platform, it seems inevitable that it would be too heavy...
|
I like the retro look. Excited to hear more details on it.

The front looks just like a Hakosuka! I like it. |
The 510 is one of my dream cars.
If Nissan pulls this off well...I will be tempted. One thing though...I just can't express how important the low center of gravity is for the Twins...the Boxer engine is amazing for that. |
I like the proportions, similar to 1 Series Coupé but even better, I get the styling but would not want it. I prefer it to look more modern and more sleek. It would look perfect if it was lower (i.e 1.200 mm).
|
I like it a lot actually. I love the retro design but I'm not sure how others around my age will feel about it. Maybe too retro for some?
|
Honestly I won't give up my car even if the next gen has a turbo or it's competitor has a turbo. I do appreciate what Nissan is doing and it's just going to make things that much better kind of like the evo vs STi.
I honestly think this is HOT! Nissan won't mess this up. |
Did anyone feel like in that video, they said a whole bunch of nothing? I couldn't really get a sense of what the purpose or intent was behind this car, other than they were trying to reach out to the new generation who aren't interested in cars. And to me, that seems like a car I wouldn't be interested in.
Like the retro lines though. Just wish the beltline was a bit lower like the original. |

they discontinued it in 2002, you do really think that platform was identical? Either you want a 38 year old chassis and you reckon nothing will be lighter? or you will just be happy if they use that "S Chassis" moniker?? |
Uh, thanks for the history lesson....
When I said "something like" the S platform, this was in contrast to the FM platform used to make heavy luxury cars like the G, FX, etc. If Nissan was to say, update the S15 platform, and call it, say, the S16 platform it would almost certainly result in lighter vehicles. Being a car enthusiast forum I would think that much would be obvious, but hey, too much faith in humanity I guess... |
i like it!
|
Nissan already played this card back in 2005 with the Foria concept. Lets hope they actually built this one this time.

Give me a 510. I hate the idx. It's one if the worse designs ive seen lately. Hopefully it'll change before going into production.
|
I think its safe to say Nissan will water down the production car.
|
Overall I think it has potential, but might be a case of the watered down production vehicle actually looking better than the concept.
|
Like. Bring me the goon!
Depends heavily on eventual engine, chassis and weight however. |
Looks too concept-y to me, lots of lines and shapes and wrapped around features (rear pillars look wonky) that will never ever see production.
If the handling is there it will be a critical success (original 510s are cult status for anyone who wants to blow them off, independant rear suspension in 1968 on an affordable car) but no idea if it will sell. Sounds like they're going to re-work their current 2.5L that they sell in their trucks (good torque, kind of like the 240sx in spirit) but right now that thing only pumps out 152 bhp, they'd have to keep this thing under 2600 lbs to keep it relevant or dump some money into the engine. Probably going to garner more comparisons with the Miata than the 86 since it seems like they're trying to undercut the price. If I didn't have an 86 I'd be interested, the only way I'd pick one of these up is if the Toyobaru leaves a bad taste in my mouth somehow (hey they could all blow up at 60k for all we know). Edit: Looks better in the video than the pictures, it's always nice when the Renault partnership pops it's head up at Nissan, I think I'd like this styling more than the 86's. Also the name sucks but it's kind of irrelevant if the car is good. Edit 2: I'd love to see this lined up next to the current Camaro/Mustang/Challenger, the size difference should be neat for people who like small Japanese sports cars and "vintage" styling. |
You guys must be some extremely open minded people because while I love the original Datsun, this car looks hideous. To me at least.
|
Okay @RRnold... after going through the car again, since yesterday, the retro is starting to grow on me.... just a little though.

Most concept cars that I like, I wouldn't own. They're usually a bit ostentatious because they need to be as a prototype, as a concept. I think this prototype is no different and I think it will look much better in production trim.
Price point and chassis will determine it's success. If it has a really good chassis, the power doesn't matter as much as proven with the Twins but if it has a less than desirable chassis or is overweight then it needs a big power plant (mustang/camaro/challenger/etc). Since Nissan isn't going to build a budget muscle car then they need to deliver a good, light chassis at a favorable price point or don't even bother. This is all just conjecture on my part. |
Thanks for the pics @vh_supra26

Concepts are that, concepts. You know Nissan is going to water it down and there are even things on this concept that left me scratching my head, particularly that notch on the 3rd window. The non color-matched A pillar, the 2 tone and the center exit exhaust as well don't flow with the car. I do like how they're bringing the 510 back yet keeping that traditional boxy look, the quad headlights, those teardrop mirrors and that chin spoiler. It could have been worse where they unveil a 510 and it looks nothing like the past 510. haha Personally, I like it and I wish they could bring back all of the Japanese classics. Only time will tell but this will be winner if the criteria is met; moderately price, low weight, RWD, good balance and good powerplant. :D |
Not a fan but then again I've only been staring at the thing for the last... two hours? Maybe? But I've never been a nissan/datsun fan anyway. The idea is interesting though. Now what this really needs to do is make toyobaru think about a power bump sooner rather then later. Or at least making TRD put out a reasonably priced turbo/supercharger kit that is under warrenty... I can dream can't I?
|
After staring at the new pics from different angles I really like the NISMO version, but lack of a true manual transmission option means I won't ever buy one. CVT is fine for the base model but the performance version should allow you to row your own gears.
