What to do about this scratch?
 

Hello, I'm new to this forum and new to owning a BRZ. Unfortunately I let my father use my car to go to the store, and when he returned, backed into my drive way and scratched my rear driver side bumper/fender. The scratch is right by the tire and looks to be pretty deep.

Hopefully it won't be too difficult/expensive to fix, but I was wondering what you guys think I should do to fix it, I've learned a lot from this forum so any input is appreciated, Thanks.

Edit: Image is sideways and the host site doesn't offer a way to turn it but its supposed to be turned 90 degrees clockwise

Car is totalled.

wont be cheap. insurance deductible and body shop is the way to go.

Id just use touch up paint. But if he we paying for it I'd just get an estimate.

It hasn't yet penetrated the primer. Consistent prayer till morning should patch it right up.

Sigh. Body panel filler, sand it. Body panel filler, sand it. Primer, sand it. Self etching primer. Base coat paint. Second coat of paint. Third coat of paint, sand it. Base clear coat paint. Second clear coat paint, wet sand it. Third clear coat paint, wet sand it. Buff it. Wax it.
Silver blends easily compared to many other colors. Just go paint color-match sites and order a spray can. This total process should take about 6-7 hours with drying time.

I had a scrape on my lip similar to this one. Sameday will do it for about 200 bucks and it will look as good as new.

That's all the way into the plastic. Gonna want basic touch up if you're going cheap, or a respray/blend from a body shop if you really want it fixed back to new.

Do not take it to a body shop. The odds of it matching are very low and they'll want to blend into the surrounding area to try to cover that. This makes it extremely easy to use a paint thickness gauge to determine that the area has been resprayed.

You could add touch up paint and lots of clear to build up the area and then color sand the snot out of that area, but that's a lot of work, your best approach is probably to contact a paintless dent guy and see if they are or know a good airbrusher. A good airbrusher should be able to get that back to a state where only you can tell it's there.

If you take a pic of it from father back it would help, but if its where i think it is get the rear spats / OEM style mud flaps

You can always start with rubbing compound and see how deep that scratch actually goes. There is a thread here where a member fixed an FRS bumper with aerosol touch-up paint and it looked good in the pictures. The problem is that this is different from his repair in that you can see the rest of that side of the car, but it's up to you if you want to try to fix it that way.

I would check the body shops for the major dealer chains in your areas. A lot of times they'll have new techs doing these kinds of repairs and they'll out out sandwich board type signs to advertise discount bumper repairs. You'll get a quote and go from there. If it's more than your father wants to pay then you'll go through your collision/insurance. I'd say it'll be worth having professionally repaired.
