EVO 3 Drone Solutions

Hi guys,

Reopening this topic. I have a Greddy evo 3 exhaust catback. I love the sound it makes I can't stand the drone anymore. I drove to SF this week from San Jose on 280 and there were alot of hills/incline area which cause the car to rev about 2500 causing high way drone... It really Pissed me Off.

I am hoping someone on this forum has a solution/layout specific for Greddy evo 3 to make the drone better or go away. I have tired running the silences its awesome but then you can't hear the exhaust.

I was thinking of buying the Invidia Resonator front pipe or HKS resonator front pipe... DO YOU GUYS THINK THIS WILL WORK? In addition, if i take out my CAT will and put in the resonator front pipe will it cause CEL to go on?

Can I also just go wield on a Helmholtz Chamber to Reduce Drone? either front pipe stock or downpipe or exhaust?

Thanks,

-J

nameless catted over/frontpipe w/ Helmholtz?

Not layout specific and I don't own an evo 3 but if you want a Helmholtz you could try that.

no cat in frontpipe doesn't change anything as far as CEL, the o2 sensors are all on the first cat.

dude, just get another catback like a Perrin, Ark, or something..

The time and money you'll likely spend modifying with unknown results you may be better off just getting a different catback? Guys here have evo 3 to I couldn't handle it personally.

Blindly welding on a Helmholtz most likely wont help anything as the volume and shape of the chamber as well as the length of the tube connecting it to the exhaust needs to be tuned for the frequency you are trying to eliminate.

You might get lucky and cancel out the resonance but you are just as likely to amplify it.

Any aftermarket front pipe will be much louder than the stock one so forget that idea. Your best option is to get a different cat-back and sell the EVO3 to someone who likes loud and obnoxious or doesn't know better.

put in the silencers? lol

Turbo kit is the only answer. I have no drone on my Evo 3. Call up my boy LJ @FullBlown for the solution.

Woah. I've been wanting to try the evo3 on mine for awhile but expected it to still be obnoxious. I have stock op/fp...maybe I'll try soon.

Sound deaden the trunk.

Helped me with drone on my STI hatchback.

sound deadening under rear seat, on rear deck in where speakers would go in a normal car, and the fold-able part of the back seat. i did this and it was a substantial difference on the drone on my J2 system. i spent under 100 dollars and it was definitely well worth it. i also dynamatted the trunk lid and the trunk floor to help kill some resonance. (dynamat is not intended to block sound)

I'm curious if Greddy has been informed and aware to fix the drone in the Evo3 b/c there are a lot of complain from most forum owners. Evo 3 is a nice exhaust but Greddy need to revise & update for the better. Btw, I just can't stand why buy a perf cat back exhaust then cover it up w/ the silencer. what the hell/point ??? :)

I reached out to them as soon as I got mine in October 2012. When I finally got a hold of someone who would listen they merely suggested I put the silencers in. I explained that there was still a drone and they just accepted it as working as designed.

To be fair, its designed to create the sound that it does, sensitivity to resonance is a personal thing and varies from person to person.
