Exhaust baffle/ box structure between cat and resonator?

I searched and could not find anything definitive on this forum or elsewhere so forgive me it has been discussed. Pictures that show the underside of the 86 there is a device inline with the exhaust between the cat and resonator. It is a small box with a rounded side. It looks somewhat like a mini branch resonator but it could also be some sort of sound baffle. Does anyone know precisely what this is? I have not seen such a device on any other car. I have seen baffles on the BOSS's side exhausts and I have seen branch resonators on aftermarket systems but none look like this structure. Any Ideas?

Have a pic?

Here's a few pics but I don't see this box that you speak of.

It's closer to the engine. You can see the resonator in those pics, it's upstream of that.

Is this what you are asking about? On the headers?

Looks like a pre-cat. My old 02 Spec V had one. Tt caused a lot of problem for spec owners. The pre-cat woud degrade and bitw were getting sucked back into the head. I had a header on mine so the pre-cat was removed as it was a port of the exhaust manifold.

Oh, I just saw the diagram. Not exactly the same as what i had but could still be a pre-cat. Not uncommon for vehicles to have multiple cats...meow

Can't be a pre-cat that far down stream. Probably just another resonator.

+1

^Also, its downstream of the CAT so its not a pre-cat.

Yeah it would make sense if it was a resonator I've just never seen one look like that, also, I've never seen 2 resonators so close together. I have a hunch there might be something else to it, perhaps something for the tunners.

Someone pointed out in an older thread that it looked like a Helmholtz resonator, I have no idea how noise suppression is usually carried out but I assume it's to tune some certain frequency band.

could be the cause of the torque dip.

Everything that looks like an anomaly is the cause of the torque dip, sheesh i thought everyone knew that....
