Why would you buy frs over BRZ?
BRZ comes with NAV for $500 more.

yea but also an ugly bumper and riculoud dealership markups. not to mention low supply for high demand.

Agree that the BRZ is compelling from price for what you get standpoint. The nav and headlights are definitely upscale.
Why am I going for FR-S? I think the front of the FR-S looks better than the BRZ. The BRZ nose looks like someone stuck a big piece of plastic there. I like the simple climate controls on the FR-S. My current car has auto climate controls and it's a pain in the butt with five buttons pushed to do anything different. OTOH, if I hadn't gotten in to the First 86 program, I'd definitely be taking a closer look at the BRZ. My wife would love the leather heated seats. I'll probably have to upgrade my FR-S to leather heated seats at some point. |
Because I trust Toyota to honor their warranties more. Student rebate, and my nearest subaru dealership is in a different county. and that county's sails tax is 1% more. Scion also has two years service included.

With the destination costs factored in, you are looking more at around 1250-1300 or so more. If HID and NAV are worth that much more, and you don't mind a less neutral car out of the box, the Subaru may be for you. I am quite fond of the FR-S myself. Probably can't go wrong either way.

Why would I want a Navigation? I know how to get around town where I live.

NAV? Really? More than 50% of cell phone users now have "smart" phones. Which means GPS and maps that are UPDATED AUTOMATICALLY, on a PORTABLE piece of hardware that you are going to buy anyway, that you are going to already have in your vehicle, and is going to be upgraded about every two years with a faster, better looking model.
Why anyone would want a NAV in their car that, after two years, is going to have crap graphics, crap scratches, and cost you money to update is beyond me. I'm going FR-S because it DOESN'T have a NAV, regardless of the price. |
It's not just the Nav. and HID headlights, it’s also the LED fog light strips, higher grade cloth seats, and leather handbrake lever. I think the car is more Subaru than Toyota. It's built at Subaru's factory, 95% of the car uses Subaru parts. Better/more mature look than the FR-S (that's my subjective opinion of course). Mechanics at Subaru have more experience working on/maintaining boxer engines than a Scion mechanic.
I do like the white tachometer, black plastic dash trim, and the airbag cover on the steering wheel on the Scion. |

The main reason go to with the BRZ is the HIDS. It will be crazy expensive to add them to the FR-S. This is the main thing that Scion screw us on. I am ok with the cheap looking radio and seats. But damn HIDS baby. You got LED taillights but Halogen headlights? Come on Scion\Toyota! Oh and $850 for the Bespoke? Get our of here Scion!
We already know you could have added HIDS, since the BRZ comes with a real Navi and HIDS for only $1311 more. But hey, it is what it is....we got short changed. Actually the BRZ is going to be cheaper than the FR-S, because later in the year or early next, you will be able to use the VIP discount and get the car below invoice. You will never get the FR-S below sticker price because of the Scion Pure Pricing. We also don't know if the FR-S is going to be lighter or faster than the BRZ because we don't have that information yet. But if it is, then the FR-S is the way to go..... Any why is there a NAV is all BRZ models? Crazy yo! |
I think the most common reasons people buy the FR-S include just preferring the styling, not wanting to spend more/not being interested in the BRZ's extras, or BRZ's are too hard to come across in their area.
I went with the BRZ myself. Having seen it in person, I like the front end of the car more than the FR-S, not by a lot, but I prefer it. I used to know one of the best headlight retrofitters in the country and have a custom retrofit in my current car so I absolutely wanted HID's. Just so happens the BRZ's headlights are right up my alley styling wise. Plus I am well aware of how much it costs to retrofit a set of headlights the right way, and how hard it is to nail the styling on them. The nav unit in the BRZ looks decent and is a nice bonus. I am not sure if the interior in the press is the one we will see on the production FR-S but if it is, I prefer the BRZ's more reserved take. If I had the choice I might prefer the FR-S' suspension setup, but my stock suspension probably won't stick around for long anyway so it is somewhat of a moot point. I can understand why people might not care about some of the BRZ's features. I myself went with the premium since I didn't care too much for the limited's features other than keyless entry, the fact their center console looks better, and the seats being heated. I personally hate automatic climate control, didn't find the BRZ's leather interior to look that great, I think the push start is a bit silly on a manual transmission car where you apparently still have to push in the clutch, I like the spoilerless look better, and I think the lower grills on the USDM models look really cool without fogs. As for the folks who weighed the BRZ's added features over the FR-S... HID's are nice but not necessary, and while nav is cool it will end up dated before the car is. |
